There have been many good books out this year, just most of them being reprints or bringing out updated versions, which is still cool, and if that's the case, if we were to allow reprinted books etc, then Chris Kenners Book coming back into print wins for me out of the books being brought back. Strong Magic and Carneycopia etc I'm glad to have on my shelf, but kenners stuff I see as more useable for me, plus was one of the funniest reads ive had in a long while.
Books are the way to learn for me and its how you become unique. Ive seen people watch Mciahel Finney, Bill Malone, etc on DVD and have bascially just copied the routine step by step, which is what you should be doing, but not copying the exact same lines etc as well. That is them perfomring their magic as they perform it, on the DVDs, they say it works for them as that is who they are, but people who watch the DVDs become Michael Finney and Bill Malone etc, as they don't think for themselves, whereas from a book, you learn the structure, the timing, th purpose, and its just more in depth. Yes DVDs show you what it is supposed to look like and you learn it quicker, but if you want to learn it thorugh, then when reading, there is 100% more concentration on learning the trick than when watching a DVD, so COME ON BOOKS!!!!!!!!! |

For "trick books", my nod goes to a book which just hit the market. Will comment further when the review is officially published. Though I will say, Dear Mr. Fantasy is the best book of card tricks I have read in a long time, and easily makes the #2 spot for me.

Although Peo entitled this thread "Best Book of 2005" in his post he changed it to "THE book of year 2005."
This, then, is in the tradition of the "Time Magazine's Person of The Year" designation which has included Ayatollah Khomeini, Nikita Krushchev, and others too distastful to name in this context. So Amazing Dick, I agree with you. The Book of the year 2005 is definately "The Protocols of the Elders of Magic by Max Maven." Bennett |

Based on all the feedback I went out and got a copy of Dear Mr. Fantasy. It was so good (as card material goes) that I followed up with a copy of Smoke & Mirrors. So, I'm officially hooked on Bannon's material and he now wins my vote, for "DMF." Thank you all for the terrific recommendation.

I vote for 21st Century Coin Mechanics. Fantastic new sleights and routines beautifully illustrated with sharp photos and easy to understand text. This is the first hardcover coin book to come out in about 20 years I think. The URV move alone is worth the price of the book. Seeing that done on the companion video CD makes you want to believe in magic. I love Bannon's card effects but this book really stands out.

My vote has to go for Richardson's "Act II," but Chuck Hickok's "Mentalism Incorporated, Volume Two" should also receive recognition!
