Yea... having trust from you're assistant would be a very good thing to have. Nothing quite like thrusting a sword into the Hindu Basket and hearing a loud, "yipe." Glad she took a liking to magic so quickly- only after one rehearsal. Just please- keep practicing! Can't stress that enough. If something is bound to go wrong; it will.
Best always, Matt Tomasko

Well said,Matt. My assistants have a saying-- Magic Hurts-- they told me they were going to have t-shirts made with that saying.

Magicleland,
Forever Plaid gave great advice above. Cute is a definite plus, but grace, class, and stage presence sells the show. An assistant who is willing to spend long hours practicing is worth her wait in gold. A well trained and experienced assistant can make effects possible and accomplish things right in front of the audience that blow people away, because they never suspect the assistant to be aiding in the steals. I'm glad your practice went well and she loves the magic because that is what it takes. I wish you the best with this venture. |

No practice doesn't make good. Practice makes permanent. As my old high school music teacher once told me!
best regards, Matt Tomasko

Matt tomasko is right and so is the other pro's about picking up a 'full time' assistant. the most important thing you must consider is HE/SHE can be TRUSTED? can he/she keep the secret of the illusion or the trick that you're doing?like Forever Plaid said, the 'cute' thing is almost of the bottom of the list when you are looking for an assistant, the top factors for an assistant, who knows hot to: trust worthy, dance, act, has sex appeal, long hair(for girls) almost all girl assistants have long hairs.. haha! and cute..
performing illusion takes practice for the magician especially for the assistants who is participating for the trick. thanks!

I am glad to hear that she is working out. Now keep up the practice and continue to keep her interested. Once you have her trust, then you will work very well together.
At your age you are in a good spot to keep her for a while. The main problem that I have faced is my assistants hitting college age and going off to school. I try to get girls around my age, but sometimes it can be tough. I have 4 girls in rotation at the moment. A lead, a main and two backups. My lead works just about every show with me and also works in my office. She is in college, but goes locally like me. She has been with me for about two years. My main is a senior in high school, so she will be going off to college very soon. One off my backups is my old lead that went off to school, but is still close enough that she can come back if needed (she has been with me for 5 years). My other back-up is about 5 years older than me, but not noticeably, but she has a full-time job and is really only available in emergencies. It can be a big change if you are used to working solo, but it helps to have an extra hand around. I also have a male assistant that goes to just about every show with me. He has been my best friend since kindergarten and has helped me for about as long as I have been doing magic. It is just sooooooooo nice to have an extra helping hand. He loads in, sets up, helps during the show, tears down, loads up and drives. It is awesome, but it has spoiled me a little bit. In the times that I don't have him, I am not used to setting up my own props and it takes longer for me. Oh well, I hope that at least some of this is helpful. |
