I am trying to do some research on magic and magicians and I just wanted to see who is their favourite magician. Doesn't have to be the best magician ever just the one who sticks in your mind. For instance mine has to be Paul Daniels... okay you may laugh but being brought up in the 80's he was probably the only magician publicly available in the UK then.

Hmmm...favorite?
If I listed my favorite(s), I'd feel like I left someone out. Some of my favorites are right here in the Café! Most, I've never seen perform, but have richly learned from, and been inspired by those such as, Mickey Silver, Jonathan Townsend, Michael Rubinstein, Curtis Kam, Dan Watkins (see what I mean?)...David Neighbors, Jim Canaday, gosh, I may as well list ALL of YOU! I now own a book that I would NEVER have found in a bookstore or magic shop (Larry Barnowsky's "21st Century Coin Mechanics"), and it has sent my coin magic interest TO THE MOON! I am forever grateful for that...this Café is a collection of ALL my favorite magicians (some I do not KNOW of yet, LOL). Now TV magicians...hmmm...David Copperfield comes to mind, but I don't consider him a "magician" as I do a great "performer". Lance Burton is another fave. Galina (from Russia) is the finest female performer I've seen (her levitation with the big ball is amazing, as is her Linking Ring routine). I could not fairly pick "one" as a favorite, as all have a certain uniqueness of their own. John Carney and Michael Ammar, for example, or Greg Wilson and Daryl...all totally different personalities, but GREATS, in thier own style. All in all...YOU...the Magic Café...YOU are my favorite magicians. I hope I live long enough to someday meet you in person! Doug |

Well, I’d have to agree with Doug about listing them, I know I would leave someone out. But let me try and give a different answer…
I would have to list 2, the first would be the first magician I saw at a school assembly, I have no idea what his name was (after all it was over 40 years ago). My second one would be the last magician I saw who did a trick that made me smile (of course all watching almost anyone makes me smile). I know that’s probably not the answer you were looking for, but it’s the best I have. Dave |

It would have to be Lance Burton. He's from my hometown of Louisville, Ky. and he came back a couple of months ago for a show to benefit the Louisville Magic Club. Classy, likeable, and polished. Great with the kids too.

Eugene Burger. He is just such a GOOD magician and his theory really hits my magic hard.
I LOVE Penn and Teller most of the time. Aside from that, I guess I am my favorite magician.(sorry if it sounds cocky.) |

Dick Williams. I grew up watching Magicland every Sunday morning and he was the first magician I ever saw. Magicland hosted by Dick holds the world record for the longest continuously running magic themed TV show.

Well, to go by performances I have seen, I would go with Whit Haydn, Glen Bishop, Rene Levand(all electronically) and Dave Ettl (Local).
Not to knock the previous mentioned guys who were awesome, but I haven't seen many that aren't on an instructional DVD.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Penn and teller have hilarious specials. I always watch them, but they do more pranks than magic though.

I would have to say Copperfield, just because his performances always embody so many different types of magic, just all around the best magician.
I'm telling you the truth, I swear....
