Hi I want to get some doves for a dove act. I have done a lot of research and am just woundering how much it will cost. I want to use at least 4 doves. I would also like to know what I need to keep them in: cage, aviary, room, etc.? and also how much it would cost to get all the props harnesses, jacket, and anything else.
Thanks! |

Well,
The doves will be a continous expense beyond initial like cage, etc. (Food, care, etc.) The props will vary GREATLY! Can you sew? If so, awesome. I make all my own harnesses but if you purchase them, you can expect a decent expense there. The costume, stage props, routine you have to create, music (?), your time training the doves, silks. It truly can run into thousands of dollars. Start small, work your way up if you enjoy it. If you enjoy it, the expense is secondary. I realize I didn't give you a dollar amount but there is no way without knowing what act you are desiring to perform. Let us know! Good Luck! T |

Magic_man204 I hope you go at it in the right time frame to start off with 4 birds may be a leap doves are pets first not mear props, and the expence of your care training and love (yes love ) will be the largest expence in dove work.

Thanks. I have owned a single dove for about a year and absolutely love her. but she is a little older and I havent done any training with her wet.can I start training her now?or should I just get new birds for my show.i would also like to know how many you can put in a cage, but still allow the birds the space they deserve.i have a mom that sows very well.she has made me a harness and a couple pockets. I have done one show w mith my dove . it was a sinple jacket steal but went over great. I didn't use her in any other shows because I felt like the one dove just didn't fit in. but I think it is to late to start her over again?
any tidbits would be greatly appreciated. |

Try to spend some time perching her on your finger and climbing her up your hand. Make sure you are in a small room with little or no furniture this will prevent her from hurting herself if she flies. If she is calm and stays with you try to transfer from hand to hand by gently touching under her chest with your index finger she should climb on. A couple days of this and you can try to seperate the hands a few inches and gently toss her from hand to hand. I don't think any bird is to old to train to at least to stay with you.
Now keep in mind if you have 4 birds you will need to spend time with each bird to have them all trained, this will become a large time investment. I am not trying to discourage just educate. I have had up to 8 birds at a time and found the number of venues where I could use an act with a number of birds limited. I now keep 4 birds in a 2'x3'x 4' high aviary in my home. They are messy and sometimes noisy. I use 2 birds in every show I do, and sometimes all 4. But in my estimation, if they weren't pets that I as well as my children love (my wife hates them) then they would not be worth the work. Look at how many magicians there are who have never used animal in their act.

This was my response to your question in another topic.
Quote: You can't put a dollar figure on when you are ready to start. I would invest in the Tony Clark's Unmasked and Unmasked 2 and also Andy Amyx's doves 101. Those pluse the vids you already have should give you a good knowledge of what is required, what can be done and start you thinking about exactly what you want to do.

I think if you've had one 4 could be ok to handle. But you may want to just go up get 2 then 3, then 4.
they thought it was impossible until they met me.
theres no reality in magic did the magician come before the assistant or the other way around. |

I would think that you'll be able to find doves for $15-$20 each. The harness and various dove apparatus will cost quite a bit, if you buy the stuff from a magic shop or company. There's some books that you can buy that shows how to make different items. Try to find a copy of Chalet's Encyclopedia of Dove Magic.
In my opinion, one of the best dove magic routines that I've seen is one where the magician had a small cage on stage with a dove in it. He let the audience see the cage while he did other effects and didn't say anything to bring the audience's attention to it until he was ready to use it. The audience could plainly see that it was a white bird and was a live one. When the magician was ready to do a routine with this dove, he brought out a paper lunch type bag and reached into the cage and got the dove in his hand and took it out of the cage and put it into the paper bag. Then he blew the bag up with his mouth and then smacked it with his free hand and it popped and down floated a white feather. He then produced the dove with another apparatus, which many ways to produce doves are available. If you want to know the workings of the above dove routine, I can help you out if you PM me. Best, Jerry .. |

It sounds like a segment of something Rich Marotta has done.
