My friend, Bob Read, who was visiting at the Conference on Magic History, just passed away today of a heart attack. He was an incredibly funny man, and knew an immense amount about the cups and balls.

Meeting him was one of the highlights of the Centenary Celebration for me.

Bob was working on a massive presentation of all the various pieces of graphic art he had put together over the years concerning the cups and balls. He showed me one of the sections of it. His scolarship was incredible. And the stories of how he was permitted to photograph some of the art were equally incredible.

His passing is a real loss to magic.

Bill,
This is a shock as he and I had conversation when we first met at FFFF. He said how he had hoped to get back there again but not this year.

His talk at Collector's was good but as Bob often did, he got off track a bit. If he got a laugh on something, he would divert . But a good talk.

Such a nice guy and great performer. I would have loved to been on his walking tour of London.

My condolscenes to his wife, Pauline and family.

My condolenses too to his family. I was just watching the Michael Ammar Cups and Balls DVD where he gave a virtual tour of the different artworks there were of the cups and balls. He is such a great loss to the community.

I just got the news a minute ago.

I'm shocked.

Bob was one of the funniest people I've ever met and his knowledge was amazing.

I don't know what to say.

My thoughts and sympathies go out to his wife.

I heard this a short time ago. I was only familiar with him through his videos. Bob Read was a funny, clever, and creative man.

My wife and I were talking about him after we got the news. Both of us commented on how great it was that we took that walking tour with him.

Oh man. That's like being hit by a 2x4 before I'm even awake. I'm not even sure what to say. . . what a shock. I miss him.

I'm sorry he's gone. I saw him lecture at a Magic Circle history day (in London UK) and he had us rolling in the aisles.

A great loss to magic, and to those who loved him. He was a wonderful mixture of historical scholarship and lay-you-out-on-the-floor funny. His signature pieces will be forever his, but he was just quality in whatever he did. Condolences to Pauline and family.

A terrible loss to magic and to potential students. I still pull out the Genii issue which featured him, and what must be the best example of misdirection I ever read. Here's hoping that his scholarly work has or will be published.

For that matter, were any of his performances or lectures captured on video or film?

I have Vol. 1 of the videonics Bob Read Impromptu Miracles. Does any one know how many more there were? I would like to get all of them. Any suggestions?

Thanks

What a great loss to magic. I saw Bob Read twice, one time when he lectured in the 70's and another time when he performed in the mid-90's at a Collector's Workshop convention. I've seen tons of performers and even compared to the greats I've seen he was EXCEPTIONAL. One of the funniest things I ever witnessed, performed by a magician or non-magician, was his portable dog carrier bit. The night I saw him perform that piece, jaded pro magicians in the audience were literally cyring with laughter. May he rest in peace.
