Years ago I saw a set of Cups and Balls that had a Lota function built in so you could produce water as a final load. It wasn't a switch like tim and sue's version but actual double walled cups. If anyone could point me to where I could find a set, it would be appreciated.
Thank you, Paul W. Draper |

Bill Palmer has a set in his Cups and Balls Museum that delivers a water load. I don't know if it uses the Lota principle or not. They were made by National. They can be seen on the Jumbo Cups page.

Scotty York worked out a method a number of years ago for the same purpose. He graciously shared it with me but it is not mine to share. If you contact him maybe he is willing to offer his knowledge. Scotty's does not in anyway harm or modify the cup.

The National water cups are very impractical. They are also quite expensive. It would be much better to work out something similar to what Scotty York used. It doesn't take much imagination to figure out a method.

Scott Alexander has a routine on his "Midnight Show" DVD entitled "Coffee Break," which might help you out. I got my copy at Barry's Magic Shop, which can be found at

I think it was Paul Rosini that worked that out with the water load in the set of cups and balls. I think the story behind that was he was tired of finding baby chicks for his Galli Galli baby chick finish.
So he tried to water load and had a drink as the finish to the trick.

Glenn, it was my belief that Paul Rosini used a set of the National cups which have the built-in gimmick.
Or, is your post responding to something else in the thread, and not to my own post? It's unclear what you were attributing to Rosini: the York idea, the Alexander idea, or something else. Sorry about being confused regarding your antecedent! |

Thank you all for your comments. Bill, what made the National Cups impractical? Did they leak? was it hard to move the? did hey make too much noise? I know about scotts load from his video. And may try that. thank you. Where could I find a set of the National cups?

So he came up with this lotta bowl ending and then had national magic put the cups out. I have a set I got from Chicago magician John Shirley who also did puppets here in Chicago. He said that they were the kind of cups Rosini used in his act and was one of many that told me this story. As far as the cups I have never used them in a show and you have to put tape on the sides to cover the lotta hole. Murray the escape artist had a set of cups that he did the shell game with using three cups and a glass of beer. His set up might work better to produce three cups full of liquid. Anyway that is the info I have on this subject - I have no idea if the story about Rosini is true or not.

I actually have a set of these I inherited from my wife's grandfather, but have never been quite sure what to do with them. I don't suppose there are any published routines.......

Ah, Glenn, so it was the National cups you were referring to with regards to Rosini. I figured that was the context, but there have been a few ideas tossed around.
There's been other work in terms of producing liquid, both along the lines of the liquid pouring out of the cup, or the production of a full glass of liquid from beneath the cup. I think that Jim Riser is working on an idea of an insert which can be loaded firmly while the cup is mouth down, and then allowing the liquid to be poured out. I don't recall who originated the idea of such an insert for holding many objects while the cup is mouthdown, but I occasionally use some I made myself to produce a shower of either dice or coins from the mouthdown cup when it is lifted. Like seeing someone produce a cupful of liquid, it is clearly impossible for so many coins to be loaded into a cup that they don't spill out when the cup is turned face down and placed on the table... *laugh* |

The National Water Cups are large and somewhat ungainly. Also, the sharp-eyed spectator will notice that there is no inner ridge corresponding to the shoulder bead. When loaded, they are somewhat heavy and even difficult to hold on to. And if they ever get a dent, it cannot be removed.
They are very difficult to find.

Bill is right about the cups and they dent easy. I have never used them in a show. For stage I use the set of Galli Galli cups I got from Pete Biro. It would be nice to produce a filled glass of water and then follow up with the Bev Bergeron gold fish production in a glass.

Glenn, I've sent you a private message with some ideas (workable, or at least which have worked for me) for production of a full glass. You could also produce a fish using them...
