I agree. It is a personal opinion and we are all entitled to have one. You may not agree with it, but we can agree to disagree without anyone getting all upset about it. An opinion is smeones personal thoughts on any given issue or topic. You either agree with it or you don't. You can also tell why you do not agree with it, but do not allow yourself to get upset and angry over it. It is not worth it. We can even learn from a difference of opinion. I know I have on many an occassion.

The PB&J routine is worth the DVD bt itself.
It was originated that way by Bruce Bray. I have started doing the Cardographic the way Ken does it (with permission), and the PB & J, and both are the highlights of my show. I just did both in Ontario at a church,( a service dedicated to kids) and even the adults enjoyed the presentation of the PB & J. They are not fooled by it, it is not an adult trick by any means, but the bi-play in it is just great entertainment. Ken may have mistakes in there, but I have never looked for them. I have this on VHS, and the thing "rolls". I have wore it out. Make anohter one Ken, I think it is great. |

Of course, it should be pointed out that part of marketing (making money, or dough, from your show), is not only the actual marketing, but offering a quality product / service / show in the first place. That's how repeat business and word of mouth happens. So, even though Ken might not have talked about the marketing aspect as much as some wanted (or were expecting), the very fact that he modeled a quality show is part of teaching others about marketing. - Donald P.S. Stevie, I didn't mean to come across as attacking you. I haven't even seen Ken's DVD. I was just asking for a review to be balanced, especially asking you to tell us more about what you liked, because you kind of glossed over those points in your first post. Your second post helped to fill in those blanks a little bit. Thank you for responding to my request.

I liked Ken's DVD even though the first run edition came without the word dough on the cover. Maybe it will be a collector's item.
Warning nitpicking ahead...(The mom who picks nits has clean kids.) The thing I do not like about the instant magician is he has no feet. When I used to do this kind of thing for boy scout camp out skits we used a poncho and the guy in front had a pair of boots on his hands. The funniest part was him scratching his nose with his foot, then doing a mini Balduchie(sic?) levitation. Just another random tidbit from the dusty cobwebs in my mind.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I've not seen the video or heard of it so no comment there, I am wondering about the comment that David Kaye (silly Billy) not defending himself. What exactly does David need to defend himself about?

No worries Donald I took it as it was meant as was a fair point which I rectified. steve v there was about 10 pages of debate about the book by silly billy. it got deleted because the originator of the thread kept slagging him and other pros off really badly. it was a good thread other than that one person though

The number one thing I got from the DVD was how music can add such a large dimension to your show. You may have a great birthday party show, but adding music and sound effects really brings it to a new level. Thanks Ken Scott!
May the magic be with you!

I remember the Silly Billy thread. David did respond about the issues addressed, at least when I asked him about it, so cuz he isn't here doesn't mean anything other than he doesn't come here.

All I want to say here is that I think this thread is a great example of a healthy dialogue and debate regarding products for the kid show community. All the posts were thoughtful and mature. Congratulations. We are getting better at discussing and respecting others opinions.
FYI- Bruce Bray's PB&J routine first appeared in Magic magazine's kid show column. You can also find it written out at http://www.sillymagic.com. Click on "columns" |

Is there a DVD that can be called perfect? What value does a DVD have to the viewer?
With magic costing $20 to thousands, it is a pleasure to see routines on DVDs. How many times have we bought an item based on a dealers demonstration of it? (Do we use it in our act after the purchase?) I have viewed every David Ginn VHS produced before I saw Ken Scott's "Making the Birthday Dough". I also watched Patrick Page, Sammy Smith, Tony Daniels, Dave Risly, Barry Mitchell, and many others. There was a wide range of performance styles in these. Everyone of them has something I could praise and critize. What's Ken's DVD had that stood out was a well timed and choreographed, act. His costume fit his personality, his subtle marketing skills to remember his name, and his introduction leaped out to say, this is going to be a fun party. From the start I had a smile on my face, that's a good sign, from my perspective. It was clear the DVD was staged, and not a true living room environment with half looped parents talking in the background and kids under three running wild and crying. I bought the DVD to study the Fantasy Magician. Well, not wanting to copy the routine, I tried very hard to be creative, and each time I failed in something. Finally, I found out where I went wrong. I got a private tutor lesson over the phone from Ken. Ken told me to stop trying to turn the kid into a magician, and work at just having fun, use as much as the original routine as possible because it is timed tested. My problems were solved by that conversation. To that end, I thank Ken. I was trying to hard, when simplicity was in order. I rarely read the backs of the cases, I take the DVD and place them in a thin case, this way I can store hundreds easily on my shelves. Well, was I in for a surprise. It was like an added bonus when I got the candid conversation and marketing talk at the end of the DVD (Before seeing Doty floating). It was like getting two-DVDs for the price of one, or what a bonus I got. Considering all the DVDs I had, this top the list way over any of David Ginn work. (Not meant to say They were bad, only that Ken's DVD with marketing tips as well as the use of music was worth the price of this DVD... throw in lots of routines, top it off with the Fantasy Magician, then add a way to sell your show, that's a winner of a DVD.) Do I like every routine Ken did? Yes. Am I going to use all or most of his routines, NO. Like, Silly Billy's Book, this DVD belongs in every Kid entertainers library. What Steve said, "I did get a lot of good advice from Ken's DVD and was worth buying." should have been bolded. It was the most important statement and should have topped his posting, so the readers now could understand, what he didn't like. I think that statements says alot. GO buy it, but be aware, you might not like everything on it or if you're style is not exactly like Kens, you will still find value in this DVD. To me, Ken is a "leader and shacker" in the world of children entertainers, as well as having a creative mind. (See all of his creative products on his http://www.KenScottProducts.com website.) I too am waiting for his next DVD. He will sell 1,100 of them too!

I have Ken's DVD and, like everything, looked at the parts that work for me and realized there were things that didn't.
There are so few good dvd's on kids performing, I value it as a resource. This could be said of every magic or vent tape I ever purchased - take what works for you, but no tape or dvd will be all things to all people.

I'll agree with that. If you buy a $25 book or DVD and only come away with ONE thing you can use in your show & get better with, then that purchase was well worth it.

I have the DVD and it was well worth every penny. It's one that I tend to review quite often. The performance and the interview were equally beneficial to me. There are a lot of good DVDs out there for kid show performers and Ken's is at the top of the list (IMHO). Thanks for a great product Ken!

I did enjoy a few of his routines, but I guess based on the title I expected more in depth information on what works at making you more money. Pro's In his interview he discusses advertising and giveaways. I really like a few of his ideas he has here, such as the magic wands and the little kits he puts together himself. He shows the importance of music and sound systems. His sound incorporation is very seamless in most of his show. I really liked how he didn't have to stop and fiddle around with a cd player. The fade up/down of the music was a very professional sounding touch. Talks about live animals. I did learn more about production boxes and liked that he showed his favorite two. Con's I am looking into purchasing a sound system, so when I got to the sound section I was very excited to get some useful facts. He basically gives the name of the system and the cost and tells you it is very important. I was hoping to get some practical advice from a working pro such as how much power he uses (watts) and how big of a crowd it will work for. Even if it is just the one example of what he uses. When he talks about his bunny he says how it will get you more money/shows. Not a real surprising revelation. I have been thinking of adding a bunny to my show for that very reason. He goes over the breed he uses and the production boxes he likes, but not much else. I was hoping to get some insight into costs to keep a bunny, how much hassle it would be, and any other potential problems I need to know about. He mentions doves bothered him because they coo in the mornings. Are there similar issues with a bunny I should know? Are they stinky and high maintainence? Is the rabbit biting a child ever an issue? I think you get the idea, I wanted more information. I would give this a 2 out of 5. It has some useful info on it but not as much as I was hoping to get.
