Hi,
I was wondering how people handle the sound made at the end of the production. At the moment I am just pretending to hit myself or the cieling with the straw, but Im pretty sure there is a better method.

Also I was wondering what routines people use with this prop, beyond the presentation of getting angry about having a small coke and saying "at least they gave me a large straw"

Thanks a lot for your help,
Kennan

Kennan,

I'm not exactly sure which noise issue you are asking about. Are you referring to the little pop at the end as the remaining straw snaps open? I perform this one all of the time and that has never been a problem as the kids usually make so much noise at that production that they never even hear the pop. Additionally my actions with the opposite end hitting the ceiling tend to draw attention away from the bag.

I don't know if that helps answer your question.

I've performed the straw many times (for a while, I was using the wooden pole version), and that noise has never been questioned. Just don't draw attention to it.

Kennan,
I know exactly the sound you are describing - I'm trying to come up with a method of squeezing the bag towards the end, to slow the "pop" of the last bit of straw production.
May the magic be with you!

Usually the pop noise isn't a problem because most of the kids are yelling and reacting to the appearance of the straw that no one pays any attention to noise. I f you perform for only one or two people, they might hear it, but remember they are watching something amazing and not listening to it as much as you may think.

My problem is that if I pull out the straw to give the kid, I had to figure out a way to get rid of the straw without the kids grabbing or playing with it. I say I'm going to give them a milk shake, the smallest one I can find. They can't drink a shake without a straw. Then I discover the straw, pull out the big one, start to give it to them, and then say, "Wait a minute, this doesn't even have wrapper on it, here's (normal straw with wrapper on it) a clean one."

Its worked on several shows and I have an assistant to take the big straw away after I'm done this it.

Good luck

Kennan,

Are you pulling the straw out slowly or quickly?

I think the posters above are correct in that the noise is not an issue(or should not be) because of the excitement of the children.

If you pull it out a little and then a little more and a little more building it up and reacting with funny facial expressions that get the kids laughing and then some funny sounds that get them laughing harder and you pull the straw out further and further and by the time it comes all the way out and the sound is produced not even you will hear it over the laughter and excitment of the kids

Also Mark Daniel has a great way of producing this from a stocking with a candy cane type top that is great for holiday shows. The thickiness of the stocking material masks the sound better than a paper bag.

Hope this helps

Mr Bray

Does Mark D. market the effect you are talking about? It sounds great.

Ken,

I am not sure if he still has it on the market. You could contact him at kidabra.com and ask him if anyone is interested in it.

THIS IS THE WROST F-ING PROP I HAVE EVER PURCHASED AND I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

First of all, the pictures show the straw version as stripes going up and down but the one you actually get are angled and are only either red or yellow depending which direction you pull it from.

Secondly, as least for me, when pulling the straw out you can obviously tell that its rolled within itself because the its uneven while unrolling and the ends are not perfect. You can see the angled end and FINALLY it breaks apart right in your hand.

OD NOT BUY PIECE OF ****.

I used to use a giant straw but it's more trouble than it's worth, for me anyway. You have to store them open, tightened with bands, that takes time. They crack and wear out. And I prefer not to roll them back up in front of the kids, so then you have to bring it back to your car open. Someone told me of a device to roll it back up automatically, but then you still have to open it at home and store it open.

I vanish a cane (vanishing cane) then apparently reproduce it from my empty hat (appearing cane). Under cover of placing the re-produced cane in my case (I stand it upright sticking out of the top of the case), I secretly load a stack of 5 nested coke cans plus the giant straw in the empty hat, then finish the routine by producing the cans one by one from the hat followed by the straw. This is my opening routine when performing for kids 8-10.

In my adult parlor show, I use some candy in a bottle labelled "Viagra" in producing the straw from a paper bag. In my kids' show, I use it as part of a broader routine but it is always a kids' favorite. Sadly, old school McDonald's straws are getting increasingly harder to find.
