As I have decided to only perform mentalism professionally (I will still perform close-up casually) I have a question on routining mentalism. Should one continue picking people during the actual performance? Or should one have people randomly selected (possibly from Tossed Out Deck) and interact with the four people on stage in a series of tests without continuing to select people? Also, how many effects should be in a 60 minute show of Mentalism? Thank you for your thoughts.
Cheers, mackmania

Mackmania,
I would, personally, have a tough time having 4 people on stage with me for an hour. Therefore, I would choose spectators as I needed them. The number of effects will vary. A simole psy. force may take but a minute, while the memorization of a magazine could be a 10-12 minute routine. I think that it will have much to do with your character. Sorry I could not be more help, but I bet that others will chime in with better advice. Peace, Parson

I suggest choosing different people for each demonstartion unless the effect is a pretty obvious two-parter - two or three stages of a book test, for example.
As to number of effects - Kreskin can make one effect last a half hour. Others go through the routines quickly. A friend of mine does four effects in a 45 minute period. I do seven. Another local performer does about 10 or 11. How about this: pick nine effects that would fit together nicely in an estimated one-hour show, put them in a logical order, rehearse the act having someone time each effect, and then cut or add as needed. Be prepared to perform major surgery on the show. I wasn't happy with mine (if indeed you can ever be totally happy) until about a year after putting it together. And I still make minor changes every so often. |

Some great ideas on this is Richard Osterinds vidoes (Bonus material).
May I suggest looking into it. Ian
