A few years back, Rudy Colby did a TV special, in it you may remember that he pounded a nail into his nose. it is very cool and very gross. I know that this has been a carnival stunt for years and years, but where can i find out how it is done? thanks in advance.

Jonny,

Hey there! look to the top of the Magic Café page for a button that reads "search", and search for "nail in the nose" and see the posts about this topic.

OR there's a topic called "Believe it or not...Discussions on fire walking, eating glass, laying on a bed of nails and other side-show stuff"

Thanks "the sponge" I checked the search so I know where it is, however, I did not find this subject, I must have added or left something out. Thanks for the tip though, any other suggestions?

Thanks Johnjnesbit! I appreciate it! Smile

HI there!
I m not sure if you are interested but the feat you are refering to is a sideshow classic called the Humanblock head. It was created by the great Melvin Burkhart..You should see the size of the spike he uses Smile

Maybe "used" is more appropriate - Melvin Burkhart passed away just over a year ago.

He could shove a huge spike in there. Apparently this was, in part, due to the results of a nose injury he incurred when boxing.

Cheers

The old carnival acts are still preserved by performers who generally learn them from older performers. Todd Robbins inherited much of Melvin Berkhart's carnival stuff. Todd does the Blockhead act, as well as several other carny things. Harvey Newman is another performer who carries on the carny tradition.

Supposedly this was originally performed my Indian street performers.

Stranger than Fiction by Derek Lever is a good resource, as is Thrilling Magic published by Supreme magic company. As far as I know both of these books are out of print.

I learnt it from a circus fire-eater, it's always best to find someone who can teach you!

Seems to me that it is in print in Swami/Mantra and there is a video tape with Todd Robbins teaching "geek" stuff (Stevens Magic sells it). Truth is that you just have to try to do it. Warm the blunt nail up and slowly stick it in. Go gently.

I tought the block head to myself a year back. Before you do this though you must realise that it is a vatry dangerous act. If you were to cut your self inside you nasel passage then you could get an infection that could spread to the brain. My father is a docter and he found out about my block head act not long after seeing slides of poeple who had there eyes pop out of there skulls because of an infection that caused them to expand. now i know im telling you of the extreems but hey it can happen. also is it just me or dos every magician perform block head these days?

I was unaware that Melvin Bukehart has past away..That is sad to hear.
Todd Robbins is one of the best sideshow guys in the business. ALso a note just like fire eatting and sword swallowing, The human blockhead is still very dangerous...and like any sideshow feat it should be approched with caution AND WITH the aid of a professional. Speaking of wich I m looking for a fire eatting teacher..I will NOT learn from a book and could not make it to the coney Island school this year Smile Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Slim's Discussion group has threads pertaining to Mel Burkhart, the Human Blockhead ,and related topics... BTW
there is no need for a broken nose to do the act. Also, in his later years, (Mel performed into his 90's used a hinge pin rather than a nail...
Mina, when are you coming to San Diego so Krista & I can teach you?
