First, never let your wife answer the phone! We had a call the other day asking if we had a Santa Claus to deliver presents on Christmas eve. Well she said YES! and booked the gig for $50. Not bad for 15 minutes. The problem is we don't even have a Santa suit and I have never even thought about this.
OK Then she called the local costumers and ordered a Santa suit, They have it in stock so I get it today. Yep, never even thought about this until that phone call. Now we have just spent $500 on a costume and I have no idea how to market this new venture. I have thought about calling and placing an ad in the local Community Press for our section of the city and do a fast flyer to post in all the toy stores and bulletan boards, but how about some other ideas. How would you do last minute advertizing to get this going? Thanks Peter |

Try advertising in the classified in your local paper. and set ties for specific areas. Allow driving times from one place to another. (Very Important)
You can recoup your expense, by doing this. It's not new and many do do it during this season.

Peter,
Don't forget to hookup with the local florists and jewelry stores too. They get out of town requests! Deliveries are a special problem for them this time of the year. Plus you are another profit center for them! Merry Christmas Santa! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I used to sell Santa, and did it via traditional means, primarily mailings. I got a good response from fraternal groups (Elk's lodges and such), unions, and retirement centers/nursing homes. They liked Santas for their parties.

Thru the wonders of a digital camera and Microsoft Word, I printed up about 10 flyers with a pic of myself as Santa and just put in copy saying "Jewelers, Florists Merchants. Have Santa deliver your Flowers or Jewelry to your customer’s home or office" with my company name and phone number. Dropped by 4 places on my way to the dentist's office and had GREAT response. Looks like I have 4 customers already plus one of the florists asked for at least 5 copies because she is going to a chamber of commerce meeting tomorrow and will pass them out there. Thanks for that idea. Peter |

People tell me I look like Santa, maybe I should be doing this. It would be a good excuse to put on an few extra holiday pounds.

I was thinking you looked far too thin, but you beat me to the punch. Of course, the beard can hide a single chin, and you can do wonders with a fluffy pillow (not as fun as adding holiday pounds, but healthier!)
I used to have a big "Naughty and Nice" book that my Santas would simply read from for personalized show details. For example, at a company function they would put in humorous stories and personal details about employees, and refer to them in the book as if "checking it twice." No rehearsal needed! Keep us updated on this ... sounds like a fun gig. |
