Found in: "making real magic". By Richard Osterlind.
I am one of those beginner mentalists who have been reading through all those million threads about mentalism for beginners and what´s the best book on mentalism and what is a good effect...yadda yadda. Now I have ordered all those books and they have not arrived yet. But I know that all those mentalism-threads are literally exploding here in the caffee. I am now writing this pretty much too all those people who - like me - are asking the same questions, over and over again. I discovered in named pamphlet the named effect: Osterlind's amazing memory demonstration taken out of "making real magic". For the first time I am truly thrilled. This is exactly the kind of stuff that I was looking for. There seem to be so many different types of mentalism and I could never really explain what I was looking for. Other than saying: someting that does not use a lot of props. Someting that seems to be happening truly only in the mind. The replies I got ranged from: it's in you, not in the effect. To: you seem to be looking for the holy grail in mentalism. Nothing really helpful. Now I have found it myself. At least THIS is for me. I just know it. The effect is, in my own words, like this: The performer writes down the numbers 1 to 20 on a piece of paper. Audience consists of several people. He picks a "secretary" from the crowd. Different specs name different objects. Completely free choice. They even add additional information. Example, they say coke can, performer asks: diet or regular? old or new design? Slim or regular type? Coca Cola or Pepsi? What type of class do you enjoy it from? All this is also written down by the secretary, until all 20 numbers are used up with different objects. Performer writes nothing down, does not have confederates, does not glimpse or copy anything. Performer than has secretary call out the numbers and has appearently memorized the object including every detail, including who came up with the object. To make it even better, he can have the secretary call out the numbers backwards or in random order!!!! He can do this 20 times if he whiches to do so. The secretary puts a check mark next to every item he remembered. Realtively easy to do. Effect should, even though I just read it and never used it, destroy the audience. There is also a chapter called "the magician in the physical world" which reminded me of "zen in the art of archery", a spiritual classic. At least a little bit along the lines of this book. All in all, because of the last 3 chapters in particular, one of the best things I have read so far. I am EXCITED about the effect, even though I already know how it's done. I am especially excited about the method. WOW. Highly recommended. Imagine pulling that off. "Clean" mentalism", somehow my word for it.
If you are going to Puerto Vallarta on your acations, let me know and write me a PM. I am interested in meeting magicians.
