Hi Doug,

IMHO 13" is too small for performance, it will be better if 24" or more.
And if the face is more funny or cute, I will be more pleased.

BTW one kind of apes which live in Borneo or Kalimantan Island is Orangutan (pongo pygmaeus). Borneo or Kalimantan Island is part of our country, Indonesia. That's why I'm with Chocho, my orangutan, in my avatar. Chocho is the one which is not wearing spectacles. Smile

Thanks Budi!

The 13" size of this guy is part of the gag I have in mind for him and he was designed as a companion figure to the larger puppets...sort of a sidekick or to use an old Vaudville term "2nd Bannana". He's just a little Monkey but he thinks he's an Ape. I made it for my own use and for street work and not a Theater procenium.

The 24" and larger, is great for a small Theater type setting...I prefer about 18" and less if the character calls for it for Street use but that's just a personal preference. IF I get into making puppets for others (I might or might not) I would make whatever size a puppeteer wants. Right now I'm just doing some for myself. The web page is merely a test.

By the way...I'll be seeing lots of Orangs tomorrow when we head to the zoo.
There is one very special one that likes people to show her toys and things through the glass...she loves it when women empty their purse for her and show her the contents. I might bring the little Monkey puppet and see how she reacts.

Hi Doug,

I really like to hear what happened at the zoo. Hopefully the orangutans give some nice reaction to your little Monkey puppet.

24" to 27" is a great size to use for stage marionettes. Also, the head to body ratio is to be considered too.

Conrad using marionettes on stage a long time.......(:o)

Nor can I.

I suspect that real orangutans would not recognize a marionette orangutan as representing their species. The features that cue our brains to "orangutan" and enable us to ignore confounding things like the strings may not cue orangutan brains.

I realize that apes are much smarter than dogs, but our dog never reacts to images of dogs on TV or in photographs the way she does to real dogs.

Didn't mean to derail thread.

The origional post is 7 years old so the link may no longer be working. I know Dougs Zibits are awesome so the marionette probably is too.
Life is too important to take seriously.
