I've just written a method of getting a Subject's birth year, but so that I don't end up inadvertantly stealing someone else's methods, could anyone let me know of any ways that they're aware of of doing the same thing? You don't of course have to offer the full version if you don't want to, just a name perhaps and I'll find the full method from the source. I know the old version of getting a birth year by adding the year to the year of a memorable event, then adding X and so on, any others?

Have a look at concepts like K.E.N.T for similar ideas. Though pretty sure K.E.N.T is not an original idea either.

Buy "astro star" from edward stein. It´s a great method and the effect is a real kicker.

Richard Osterlind teaches a trick where you guess someone's birthday. I believe it's in his Perfeted Center Tear Booklet and probably also on Mind Mysteries. As far as the year is concerned, I remember coming across some methods in "Mathematics Magic and Mystery" by Martin Gardner. Either that, or it was in one of the "Self Working" books by Karl Fulves. I can't seem to find it right now. I'll try to look for it later in the week.
Thanks, Elliott |

Thanks to everyone for your responses, plenty to seek out:) I'm particularly interested in mathematical methods, so if anyone else should know of any that would be great. I've got 13 Steps, but can't find a year calculator, only a 'guess the day of my birthday' effect - am I missing it?
Elliot; what do you think of the Gardner book overall? Worth getting? Piccard; Excellent site!:) Regards, Carl |

It’s a really handy book. There are tons of effects and concepts. Many of the effects feel like “Math Tricks” and need to be dressed up a bit or incorporated into another trick. Banachek is really good at this. Some of his tricks turn these old ideas on their heads. I’m looking at my copy right now and see that I marked off 13 tricks to return to at a later date.
I found the tricks that I mentioned earlier. It seems they involve the spectator’s birthday, but don’t actually divine the birthday. There’s also a trick called “Guessing Someone’s Age”. That’s also a similar theme, but you still don’t end up with the Birthday. Thanks, Elliott |

Excellent, just the kind of thing I'm looking for Elliot, thanks....if you ever want to sell your copy just let me know within the next couple of weeks before I get around to getting it off Amazon.

Sorry Clinton. Not going to happen. I figured out this effect 3 years ago and am about to release it commercially through a professional Mentalist friend. As I've never heard of, let alone read, your trick I think we can safely say that I haven't stolen your idea. It also seems yours will be released first, so if mine does turn out to be remotely similar it will not see light of day, it's as simple as that.

This may not be exactly what you're talking about, but here's a different approach:
1) You hand someone a perpetual calendar, and ask them to look up their birthday in their birth year. 2) Ask them to tell you only their birthday and day of the week, without the year. 3) You can tell them what year they were born! This is the old "Day of the Week for Any Date" stunt reversed to discover the year. Details on this feat can be found here. |

This is driving me crazy but I just read a relatively strong method of accomplishing this not to long ago. but I've done too much reading lately to know for sure where... maybe Mindreading by Knepper??? I'll try and find it and let you know.
-Carlos Last time I saw Scott, I think he was working in Pleasant Hill, CA. How are you doing?

Thanks Scott, nice idea. Carlos, keep me posted if you would. It's begining to look more likely that what I've got is an original method, which is nice. If the following does ring any bells with anyone let me know; you don't ever ask your volunteer any questions to get the year, all the leg work is done in the set up and you know it within the first few minutes, leaving you free to do any kind of revelation you want with it.

I have a very fun routine that reveals a spectator's birth date that is in one of my new instant downloads Tri Fold. It is based on ideas of Christian Chelman, Bob Cassidy, and myself. I have so much fun with this effect and people are usually left in stunned silence.

Aside from my Birthday Coin effect I've always wanted to perform Al Koran's Birthday card. I could never find the little calenders though.

That is a great ruse. When I worked at a real job ages ago I had to check i.d.'
s and I would glimpse the birthdate and first name. All sorts of fun can be had with that info. All the best, Nathan
