I'm not a busker but my gut feeling tells me you might want to go with something a little less spectacular for building a crowd.
what happens after the knife goes thru? ... ask a busker like mario, danny, or kozmo.

If you start spectacular you get people who want to see spectacular effects.
if you start comedy you get people who want to see comedy effects. if you start serious you get people who want to see serious effects. if you start mysterious you get people who want to see mysterious effects. so see the big picture. know that the shows is in ballance. it is like a good suit but with the wrong tie. I am not saying is is bad. I am saying to you see what you want and make it fit to the whole show. |

Robert's correct.
Since I start out looking dumb I realized I can get away with just doing dumb stuff, never practice, and the crowd goes nuts.... 'cuz dumb is what they expect. I get all my dumb stuff from qenpuin.com

My thought is this is better suited to side show acts as opposed to steet busking.
Robert is right in what he says. The Knife through arm is a great effect but I feel could serve to alienate to many folk, especally family's while busking. Mario |

Tabman has been making a nice knife through arm (see the pictures at http://magicdmv.com if you want a look) for about 20 years but I'm not sure if its a good effect for the street. I wonder about violent type magic in the light of whats going on in the world these days.
It is a nice piece of magic and dates back to at least Discovery of Witchcraft. Maybe there's a way to use it to not spread horror and fear???? No blood??? Expose the gimmick??? I don't know. Happy Holidays to all, -=tabman

I've worked with my sword-through-body trick on the street, so I think I can provide some insight into this one.
The first consideration should be are you allowed to use knives at your pitch? I'm on a private pitch, and since there is nothing in my contract to say I can't I just did it. Some public areas have rules against knives swords and fire ... how far you can push those rules would depend on the local area. If someone complains you can be sure the rule is written in concert and you won't be doing it. Second is kids ... I tried to keep a comic approach to it, never indicating that it hurt or was painful. It became something more of a cartoon than a serious illusion. If you were going to do a knife through arm on the street, I would recommend you keep this mindset. Like the way Harry Anderson presents the needle-through-arm. You should not present this as something "real". Other than that, go for it and find out if it works. JoeJoe

How examineable is the knife folks?
I would not be usibg it for a show pe se but to show people how illusions and perception can make us feel. I could do with it being at least partly examineable. Ian
