I got it when I just started and found it easy to perform. More about presentation then nimble hands.

I bought a Mystery Box II from someone here and the side that holds the gaff when it's "hidden" can clearly be seen. I'm thinking this ISN'T a Mystery Box II. Should the gaff be RECESSED into the side? It's not the same size when hidden as the side of the box it's attracted to so you can see where the flap ends and then there's a small area between the side wall and the flap. Can someone tell me if this is normal? If someone picked this up and looked inside it would be pretty obvious to them that there was a flap of black cardboard there.

No that is not normal. You should not see any space. Check to see if the base
of your box is loose. I bought one here and the secret flap would extend above the top of the box. The base was loose as well so I had to take it all apart. A magi friend is showing me how to put it all back together repaired. I tried to contact John Kennedy about the box with no success.

Hi Ixnay66
The box I sold you IS a Mystery Box II. I sold my Mystery Box I, and bought the, Mystery Box II from The Magic Warehouse last year. The difference between the two boxes is clear. The structure of Box II, was no different than Box I, only the gimmik card is different, it was a 3D looking card in Box II. I saw no problem with the box what so ever. Maybe you can contact, John Kennedy with your concern and see what he says? When you asked questions about the quality of the box, I told you to examine the box when you receive it and if you were not happy with it I would return your money - It has been several weeks and I have not heard from you? The box was mint when I sold it to you because I had hardly ever used it, other than in practice a few times. The box worked perfectly for me, I was pleased with it. If you find that the box is defective I will be more than happy to refund your money on return of the box. Thanks Bill |

For a KILLER presentation for the Mystery Box, check out Larry Davisdon's Scripted Insanity DVD set.

Hey Bill, I didn't want to contact you telling you it was defective because to be honest, I didn't know if it was or not. that's why I was asking what other users boxes looked like inside.

Does your routine require using, The Mercury Fold? I really wanted to use the Mystery box but I could not master the Mercury Fold, and I did not like the idea of putting the cards behind my back and folding the card. Let me know more about your routine and where I can purchase the DVD/book and maybe I will reconsider doing this trick. Thanks. Bill |

I found you could do the Mercury Fold extremely slow and in the open since it has so much built-in cover.

Yup, my routine uses the Mercury Fold, but it's done under very strong misdirection. The spectator believes that she's holding her signed card face down in her hand, and at the exact moment that she herself turns the card face up and sees that it has transformed into another card, you execute the move. Believe me, everybody is looking at the card in the spectator's hand at that point, and you could probably Mercury Fold the other 51 cards without anyone noticing.

You can write Bob about purchassing: bobkohler@cox.net Bob is wonderful to order from. Here's the description: Big Mystery - This is Larry’s handling of John Kennedy’s superb marketed effect “The Mystery Box”. Many professionals have asked permission to perform this routine, but until now Larry has selfishly kept it to himself. It’s the bomb…quick, explosive and memorable! ________________________________________________________ I perform this and it is the PERFECT handling for folks new to the fold. All the attention goes on the spectator turning over the card. The mercury fold in any other routine I know of has to be done quickly and with attention on the performer ( which is why it has to be done quickly ). In Larry's routine you get a few extra beats to get it right. That's not why I chose the routine. I had done the fold for years. But, it's such a fun routine to perform. When you watch the performance, get ready to laugh and be fooled.

Thanks for taking the time to post this info. for me, I appreciate it very much. I will look into this and see how it goes. Ixnay66 and Larry D. Thanks for the info. whenever I would do the MF I felt a bit uncomfortable, I think the spec. would sense this. I felt like I did the fold ok when practicing it, but not in performance. I must not have been ready. Anyway, I thank you all for the good information. Bill |

Here's a tip and it's not mine: the audience looks where you look. That's why folks feel "guilt" in executing the MCF. But.....
....In Larry Davidson's routine, the audience AND the performer looks at another audience member turn over a card. It's the clasic "the misdirection is built in" routine. Have fun!

Mystery box is a brilliant concept, but I also like David Stone's card to cell phone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8hIEEV6UwM I have this, and since I carry my cell phone everywhere, I am always ready to go. There are presentational possibilities galore, plus, nobody questions the presence of a cell phone. Douglas M. |

I like this effect however the Mystery Box 2 that I purchased new from John Kennedy magic was a little defective. The box worked fine but the card has a stain on it. It looks like lacquer or some kind of finish they might have used on the box or glue. Looking at the gimmick for Mystery box 2 even if it was perfect I can't see that big of an improvement over the original mystery Box. To say the card gimmick for Mystery box 2 is 3D Looking is probably true to an extent but just barely. The size is almost or is the same and since the spectator only sees the piece in the box for a brief second they will probably never notice the printed fold. That is probably also true of the lacquer stain. The spectator will probably never notice it but since I paid 85.00 dollars if all gimmicks aren't stained I would like one that isn't. I have tried to contact John many times over the course of a year and have got no response.
Anyone who wants to look at my posts will find I am a Huge fan of John's work and still use the Animated Cigarette in every show. I use Flight Deck and Jump a lot as well. I can't imagine why I haven't heard back from him unless he has an e mail spam blocker that somehow stopped my many e mails. Is there another way to contact him? Thanks in advance for any help you might give. |

Sorry to hear that. I remembered looking at Jump reviews a while back and I didn't think I read too many positives. You must have a nice presentation.
T Timber didn't bring a great deal of postives either but I love it. I even bought a second one.

I had a problem with one of my mystery boxes and emailed John Kennedy and was told sold as is. Very poor customer service. Fortunately the dealer I purchased it from took care of me.
