I can't believe I have to ask this but may as well....
Despite always having a computer syste, having learned html and designed my own personal website, been an Ebayer for several years, and being online since AOL was $3.50 an hour, I have to ask.....how to use an iPod. Because I've never been up on stereo and musical equipment I know nothing about the iPod. For those of you stereoheads willing to help, I have a few questions before buying one. 1. Which good quality iPod is most popular? 2. I have less than say 20 favorite songs that I want on the darn thing so how much memory is needed to do so? 3. How do I get ONLY my preferred songs on the iPod? OK that should cover it. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

The answer: NO ipod (at least not that brand). You can't replace the battery (!!!!!) and its versatility is limited.
Get a generic mp3 player, and a small-memory-one would serve you fine for that number of songs - do the math, 256mb of memory is rated to hold about 60 songs. And ... just my feeling ... I refuse to settle for songs that disappear when I quit subscribing. I buy my tunes from Napster (you buy 'em anywhere you want), play each on my computer and record (while listening) from the sound card to a .wav file, then use a free utility to turn those into "plain vanilla" mp3 files that nobody can deactivate. |

Oh boy this is getting funny. Ross, after reading your post, it occured to me that I was referring to an mp3 player and not an iPod.
I like the ideas you suggested as they would suit me just fine. Now I don't know what an iPod is but don't need to as the mp3 player is what I'm looking for. I know the music techies will be reading this wondering how one could be left so far behind. Hehehehe..... |

This is what Apple preys on.
Ipods should be the generic term for the idiots who buy them.

I disagree....
I use my Ipod in my car, I've never had a problem with batteries as I use the charger... It has a super easy interface and does its job well, as well as storing all my music and playlist(non-hd based memory MP3's hold about 4gig max). Perhaps if you read a lot on the internet you might not like the apple ipod for whatever reason(usually politcal in the sense that it has little to do with the ipod itself). I love mine and everyone I've talked to that has owned one loves theirs too.... it does its job and it does its job well. If you want to talk about apple's battery replacement program, or DRM with music, ect those are all valid issues but don't goto the ipod's core worth. All batteries fail and ipod's have a good quality batery that is on par with other batteries on the market.... yes due to the design apple can charge more to replace it with anotherone, but it isn't double aa's they are sticking in there.... and you can also do it yourself if you want, that is a price you pay for a high quality internal battery... |

I have a standard MP3 player and an Ipod. My Ipod is much better in my opinion. Sure you cant replace the battery in the Ipod, But buy the time it cant be recharged any more, you would have upgraded any ways. I have had my Ipod for over a month and have only charged it once and it still hasnt needed recharged. Ipods are great quality. don't worry about getting an expensive one if you go to ipod either. Get one of the 200 dollar ones. It will pay off. You have a peice of equiptment that will last a few years and beyond. your standard MP3 player wont do that.

The ipod shuffle is great, I don't care what anyone says. It would be perfect for you. 99 bucks.

MPIO FL100...so cool to look at, real small, 1 AAA battery, FM radio, mp3 and wma files (wma smaller files & better quality), Internal memory and SD card.
Don't get taken in by the IPOd hype. For what you want you could even pick a small non descript mp3 player for a few bucks ..disposable at that price...and you won't have to be worried about being mugged for it !! Howard |

Corey,
What type of mp3 player do you have? An Ipod is just a brand of MP3 player (The most popular). Before I bought my MP3 player, I did a TON of research. In fact, I went to the store and came back 3 times before actually buying one, because I wanted to make sure I got the best deal. Several runs of Ipods have battery problems, and the battery doesn't last as long as it's supposed to. There are MP3 players made by so many companies, I can't see how you could class all MP3 players except Ipod to be of low quality. I myself have a Rio Carbon, and although it's not the best out there, it cost around the same price as an Ipod mini when I bought it, and I've had it for almost 2 years now with no problems. I'd suggest looking around before deciding on an MP3 player, and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I've done more than my share of research when it comes to MP3 players. Shane Wiker |

I'm a PC (over the Mac) guy -- no a PC zealot, but I LOVE my iPod. I don't know if it matters too much what mp3 player you get, though, if you are truly only going to have 20 songs on the device. I suspect, however, once you get an mp3 player that you will want to put a lot more songs on the device. Throwing out the garbage on certain albums, organizing all kinds of playlists,... the iPOD interface is awesome and incredibly easy, and it works flawlessly on my Windows XP PC. Since you are obviously not technically challenged, you will easily be able to use the iPOD right out of the box. It is extremely intuitive. If you have an apple store near you, then stop in an play with one for a few minutes. You'll be sold. If you truly are not going to have only a few songs, then get the 2G or 5Gig Mini models. I think iPOD shuffle is not functional enough. I have the 20Gig model, but I have a large library of music.

Shane, I have an RCA lyra, I have had a Memorex which was complete crap. I like my lyra, But it doesn't really do it for me. I have an Ipod shuffle. I love it. I purchased the 1 gb model. It says it only holds 240 songs, mine currently has over 400 songs on it. Crystal clear quality. Granted I will probally replace this in a year or so. I replace all my electronics quite often. I Normally get a new cell phone every year, new computer every 2 years. New tv, vcr, and DVD every 3 years and so on. I don't get into the debate about Windows and Mac, because its pointless seeing that Bill gates owns both. If you are only going to use your MP3 player for just a few songs, then get a cheap throw away. If you want to put your entire CD library on it, then get an Ipod.

(Book of Romacletians 5:666) Also a report from the New York Times this morning that a gang of thugs in black suits were caught rifling the offices of the Democratic National Committee, and every one of them was carrying an ipod. Mysteriously, the only tune on each ipod was "Ballad of the Green Berets" by Sgt. Barry Sadler. However, the tunes were bought from itunes, and were immediately deactivated via Digital Rights Management when the owners' subscription ran out. The leader of the group was heard to mutter, "Bummer." |

I have just seen an MP3 player with digital radio that you can record from, plus it has line/mic input that takes normal batteries and can take SD-cards as a supplement to the 1gb internal. all for £79.00 ($139)
Also by choosing Apple as your platform you restrict your choice to their parameters. They have not future proofed this tech. This form of player will get cheaper and better like mobile (cell) phones. I-pod will not be able to compete by mid 2006.

A ipod mini works great and are now cheaper, I like them becuase they have a steel case and are a bit more rugged. The 4gb model will hold a bit more 3foot or 1 meter stack of CDS. Nanos are okay but I still like my mini more that my brothers nano. iPods are about simplicity not the person that wants every single feature. You can get many radio shows on podcasts too.
