Hi all,
Just wondering, does anyone have a tip or 'easy way' to accordion fold a long silk streamer? It seems to take me AGES! Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

There is not a really easy way. You can do it with two people as they go back and forth and clip in the fingers.
I have used a rectangular box and a couple of weighted objects to allow it to be folded back and forth in the box. Not really fast but it keeps things aligned. A silk winder is a faster way but does not give you the accordion pleat. Richard

I agree with Richard. I haven't found an easy way yet.

Well this is probably going to offend a lot of purists here but I steam pressed in the folds of my streamer. This helps me fold it uniformly and quickly by myself.
Also it makes it very flat allowing me to hide it better in the hidden pocket in the back of my colouring book where I produce it from.

Easy is really meant to be "faster" here, it seems to me. The right size box (or really box lid) is my method when I'm alone. When I have help, I use it because the extra fingers make the best packet. The other trick is to put a clip on it when you get it done. The clips I still use are those really meant for film in a darkroom. They have rubber tips that don't snag silk. There is even one include in the DoveLite Line of Silks (16 - 12" silks on about a 20' ribbon).
Payne, Creasing them doesn't hurt my feelings! I like the idea! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks for your replies. Good to know it's not just me that finds it difficult. Some good tips. Thanks again.

Byron,
It would be less than fair to you to not admit that stage professionals have more than one set of streamers, flags, line of silks, etc. It allows for setup when there is time and a place to do set up. It eliminates exposure, reduces panic and emergencies, is safer for your props, and gives you more time with the public when the public is available. Never let them see you sweat! Folding up three sets isn’t more fun, but it doesn’t take three times as long either. It will save you some Maloxx moments! Enjoy your magic. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I agree with Bob. I have extras for just such emergencies.
I also see where you're coming from Payne. I don't steam press my creases, but in one of my routines, I was finding that the creases keep showing up anyway, so I decided to leave 'em in. It certainly did make refolding easier. And, I guess I should mention, that on one production, I don't do accordion pleats. I fold from end-to-end until the last fold, and then do one, accordion-type tri-fold from side to side for a perfect fit in my production device. It works perfectly for this particular routine, and I think the crease pattern looks better, or I guess I should say, is less noticeable. Regan

I too keep a spare streamer pre-folded in my kit for emergencies.
I've never had to use it but it's nice to know that it's there if I need it.

Regan,
You reminded of another little trick. Sometimes you can fold the streamer lengthways until it is about 3-4 inches wide. Then you roll it up and put it into a (juice) can or cup that you can just leave in the load chamber of whatever. When it is time to produce the silk, start pulling the silk from the center (like a box of Kleenex). It leaves no creases! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Hey man! I use all the expensive stuff like used frozen juice cans. My act's exclusive. It takes weeks of trash digging to get to this point. That's the advantage of being a star on stage and the trash guy at home. Multi tasking!
I'm actually wondering if streamers would work from the new flat Kraft Mayo jars. They are really unique and look like a great way to keep silk streamers ready for the shows. Any Ideas? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

My gosh, they are making flat mayo jars. Now what am I going to use for my rat bottle?

Now when my wife tells me to 'take out the trash', I will be motivated to obey!

Regan,
You mean that when your wife tells you to do something it's optional? Lucy is a little thing but I know to obey. Motivated? Nope driven! Richard, we've been married too long! My opportunities to observe objects in the trash frequently occur. Bob |

Bob,
I don't use FOJC so there are no cans. Have you tried T.P. tubes? I am thinking that they might work. In Diamond's video he rolls a silk leaving the end sticking up from the middle of a roll and then puts it in a coke can. (High tech!) is that what you r talking about? thnx again, Bruce

Hello Bruce,
I haven't seen you here in a while. High tech is the only way to fly! Some people use the toe part from panty hose. I'll never know why they didn't use magicians to plan the space program. We could have done it all from the scrap bin! (Have you ever noticed the similarities between the space capsules and garbage trucks? Think it was coincidental? It was done in Alabama.) Keep scheming! It makes people laugh while they are worrying. Bob Magic By Sander |

Thanks for the tip about rolling the streamers!!! It's saved me ages as I was getting fed up of accordion pleating my 50 foot streamer - wish I thought of rolling it earlier!! Ah, well.
Kindest Regards, DAK |

DAK,
A streamer 50' long is going to twist very noticably. Having the can too large will allow the whole works to turn as you produce the streamer. No noticable twist in the silk! Catch me in a lecture some time and ask me about long streamers and twisting. There is another cure for twisting too if you run tight on room. (Lucy and I will get to Moncontour, France.) Bob,
Thanks. I'm not producing it from a can but a box - I've not had any twists!! Are you ever going to come to the UK to lecture??? If so I'll be there! Kindest Regards, DAK |
