Josh Jay's version is very nice. He uses a little brush which has a visual quality that lies between a pen and a feather. It looks darn good!
I remember a very strange effect of (if I'm not mistaken) Stephen Tucker: He shows a coin with a hole in the middle. Moves the hole to the side of the coin. Plucks the hole from the coin and "drops" it on the table. Now pushes the coin through the hole in the table. Isn't that creative thinking?

You started by showing the chain hanging from the purse, and the coin on the chain. By opening the chain, you removed the coin and performed the cig-thru effect. Then, the coin penetrated magically back onto the chain, and all was examinable. All that said, these days it would be interesting to have one of the coins for "Charming Chinese Challenge" gaffed for the effect. It could be routined to fit in a similar fashion.

Karrell Fox had the best PRESENTATION... he would have a lady hold the coin on top of a bottle and show a small pencil, like the golf scoring kind, and ask the lady to close her eyes.
He then pushed the pencil thru the coin into the bottle. "Open your eyes," he would say. Then he would say, "Do you know how I got the pencil in the bottle? No? Ask the others (spectators)." They would say, "He pushed the pencil through the coin." Under that misdirection he would do the Swizitch.

Thanks Curtis for the added info.
Pete, that is a great presentation. I'm gonna have to look into more of Karrell's material. Somehow it passed me by over the years. Regards, Matt |

John Kennedy had a great presentation as well, similar to but even better (in my opinion) than Karrell Fox's. In short, John would hold the coin flat on top of the bottle blocking the hole of the mouth, visibly push a cigarette through the coin and into the bottle, and then smack the coin to make it penetrate into the bottle and join the cigarette.

Don Alan's presentation of the cig-thru-coin is a real masterpiece. It is an extension of the Pressley Guitar handling. Then comes to mind the Dave Williamson and Michael Ammar handling.
To answer the original post, "What do I think of this effect". I have performed this trick hundreds of times and it was always a winner. It is truly sad that smoking bands have prevented the performance of this winner. I have done several effects like the pencil thru bill and am always asked to repeat the Cig-thru-quarter. I was lucky to see Don Alan perform his version twice for me privately when he was performing in Fort Wayne. It was a real treat. The drawing of the burning cigarette while thru the coin is the total conveniencer of the cigarette actually going thru the coin. A rolled dollar bill or a pencil cannot duplicate such a realistic effect as this. So my coin is retired until such a time as it can be revived or the effect on the viewer duplicated. Also, the wonderful idea of having 52 quarter designs on America has hurt the performance of this trick also. |

Check out Garrett Thomas' new dvds Im not sure which one its on Im thinking No.3 but he uses a laser pointer for the routine and its really a cool concept, however the real gem in the routine is his switch were you see the coin the wole time from examination to the effect is over, that's should take care of people thinking you switched the coin.

The John Cornelius bit was a quarter with a very small hole in the center (and a matching Johnson’s Cig. Thru. Quarter) and came with an oval squeeze purse and a bead chain which went through the regular (holed) quarter.
The point of the hole was that you pushed a toothpick through the hole and then ask them if they could push a cigarette though the same (and obviously too small) hole. You would then do so by sticking the toothpick though the hole and using it to push the cigarette “through” the hole. It was presented as a “bar bet” sort of thing which evolved into your actually pushing the cigarette through the quarter with the too small hole in it. Derek Dingle had a brilliant take on the effect which began by his doing the trick and exposing that he had a quarter with “a bullet hole” though it. He would then give you the “gaff” and do the trick with the “borrowed” quarter. |

Wsduncan,
Thanks for that information on the effect. When I bought the coins there was no purse, chain, or instructions. This helps. Matt |

I especially like your added touch of the Swizitch. Don't spend a lot of time looking it up. If your system is anything like mine, my lecture notes and manuscripts are in piles (almost neat piles, though) on the bottom shelf of my bookcases, and are a pain to go through and locate particular ones. I'll bet you have a better way. Anyhoo, Thanks! Phil |

Michael, I just looked up the original write-up in Genii. That's an excellent handling. Hands are constantly shown empty and everything is completely motivated. Very nice. I would encourage anyone with access to older Genii magazines to check this one out.

I like Michael Ammar's method. Cigarette thru Coin is one of my top three coin effects. But I no longer use a spectator's quarter because of the different state designs. I always ask the spectator if they have a half dollar. So I always use mine.

Thanks Steven, the important thing about the routine is how it takes the heat totally off the coin, and puts it on the bill. This idea can be applied to other similar types of routines, and other gimmicks as well.
For those wanting a real nice coin switch for this routine, I put one out in Genii back in the 80's.

Hi
I'd like to second Garrett Thomas's handling of this effect. I practiced it so much I broke the spring on my gaff. Now I'm waiting for a replacement. I've been working on doing a coin bending illusion right after the penetration. Seams to make sense that if I can penetrate a quarter I could also bend it. Great Thread James! Ralph
