I do walk around mentalism a lot. Did a lot of cold readings. I use two approaches. First is a stack deck, this is the kind of stack that I would used for the rest of my career. It is a rotary stack that requires no memory.
Once the deck is prepared you don't have to reset the deck unless the cycle is disturbed. Heard of si stebbins stack? With an eye of a keen observer, one can spot the pattern of repetition. Not with this. Richard Osterlind's Breakthrough Card System. You can also borrow a used wrecked condition deck(better - old = spirits. Up to you to patter), and set the deck up while you are chatting away with people around or excuse yourself and do it somewhere alone. Two ways of setting it up. One is by a slip of paper telling the order of the cards and just order the cards accordingly. Two is by mental calculation using a formula. Takes time though. This manuscript is priceless. I am basically too busy with something else and too lasy to memorize a deck. I produce a deck. Hold it up with the card face facing the audience, spread them. Ask one person to slowly look at each card, when he sees the desired card, say pause. Pick the card up. Notice when the the person pick the card. It seperates the deck into two halves. Let's say that you are right handed and you spread the cards from left to right. At the point of the deck where the deck is broken(card taken by the person). Left hand hold one half and right hand holds another. Put the right hand half beneath the left hand half. With a peek at the bottom card. I can tell which card the person is holding. Follows by my so-called acting, sometimes I will take this moment to peek at the card also. Once I even have a person to feel my pulse and I stop it, I pretended that I gone through temporary death so as to fake astral travel inorder to search for the chosen card. After correctly divining the card, I will give the person a cold reading based on that card. That is why I heavily reccomended Dynamic Comedy Card Readings from Woody webster. You get to learn the meaning of each tarot cards too. 2 in 1, isn't that peachy? What this book covers I personally feel what Wonder Readings from Kenton did not really accomplish, that is to systematically teach-in the symbolism of each card, that will enables one to store the meanings of each card with the greatest ease posible yet still arm with a system. Come on guys, isn't this is what we want? That is to be a true cold reader and not a sweeping one. To be fair, and clarify to anyone who reads this post. Kenton's teach-in on cards symbolism is a portion of what is in Wonder Readings, and so even if you don't dwell much in that section, the rest of the manual and cassette tapes are going to be a constant reference to your cold readings. Mine has been well thumbed. Kenton's stuff are always great! I will always say - I am Kentonized! I will live and die with Kenton. I will always vouch for his stuff. Wonder Readings has a big part that talks about intuition. But how many people really have this intuition developed to great measures. I admit, my intuition is not that great and I try to minimize the usage of my faulty intuition. Dynamic Comedy Card Readings do not clash with Wonder Readings, in a good hand, they really fused. And that is a Wonder! Dynamic Comedy Card Readings is a systematic step by step approach, it is a coursework. You can really feel good and confident when going all the way out cold. People says that Wonder Readings is the graduate course of cold reading. And I quite agree with that. It is very heavy and powerful. Kenton's stuff are my sure foundation. Actually, what I want to praise highly about Kenton Wonder Readings is it is definitely a heavyweight puncher. How can I effectively put it? It is like you have graduate from school and out in the real world and someone comes along to teach you and amplifies your talents and potentials, fine tunes you and tells you what is and what is not from the books. I do not mean in any way that Dynamic Comedy Card Reading lacks depth. It does have depth and a unique cutting edge. You should check out this book, should I say a manual and coursework that is sold and marketed by Charlie's Magic, there you can find with the best description about it. Get it before the book gets popular and the price starts going up . Ok, so much said. And I can't believed that you are still around. Remember, the deck in your hand and the card with the person. Take it back, either place it on top or at the bottom of the stack and you won't spoil the rotary stack. Simply moves on to the next person. Did I mentioned another approach I used to cold reading? I will put it on the next post as I didn't expect to write that much over here. To be brief, I uses the symbolic of colors from Kenton(found in S.A.R). Sometimes together with the above mentioned act or with empty handed without a deck of cards. I ask the person to think and visualize five colors and name them in rank from 1 - 5. I will either write them down or not. I will do a common sense interpretation based on that order. I may finishes off with a mental Equivoque. * Please forgive me All Masters mentioned here if I have not portray your materials as accurately as they should be and I am opened for corrections. My apology and best regards, braveneil For clos-up standing one to one mentalism, can someone reccomends something special? |

Hi Braveneil
Check out Mark Strivings video "Walk-Around Mentalism", available from flora.com. Great material for one-on-one situations, and generally not technically difficult. Hope this helps. Regards, Eric.
