Mighty,
I have done a knife thru coat effect for years. I am not sure if you refer to the effect in general or a particular version being marketed. If you ask about the trick in general, yes, it works very well in that enviornment because it has a kind of "sideshow" element to it and it involves one or more persons from the crowd. Again, depending on the method you are using it usually has very small angle concerns but they can be easily overcome. Mike Caveney does a great version of this which was on World's Greatest Magic a few years ago.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Two words.
Bob Read. He was the master of the knife through coat. His pamphlet on it is worth $100 to a real performer. A scaled down version is available in his book "thanks to Pepys". Thanks to Pepys is a complete 15 minute busking routine using props you already have. Keep an eye out for them on ebay. Bob was a genius and will be missed. What Danny isn't telling is that Bob Read took Danny under his wing because he was very impressed with Danny's street show. Sorry to out you, Dan.

Just be careful when using weapons, even fake ones, on the street. I had my street performing partner pull out a toy gun and someone in the crowd offered to loan his own gun and started reaching into his jacket to get it. It scared the crap out of both of us. Think about it.
Do what works for you, but be careful out there. Following the protocols, Jordan |

The guy was a genius and his stuff was so practical, so entertaining, and so portable. He really left magic many great gifts. I am hoping that L&L will be smart enough to put the old videotronics stuff on DVD. I also know that he was working on an updated lecture video with Ron MacMillan when Mr. MacMillan passed away. I do not know if that footage was ever completed but it would be a gold mine to a working performer. Bob put out a lot of changes on the knife through coat since Pepys and the new stuff is hysterical. Those of you who are lucky enough to own the pamphlet should really try the routine as it is in there. The thing just plays like a house on fire. If you are working in a venue that doesn't allow knives you can do the routine with a carrot. It actually makes it more visible. And Michael, I did the sausage finger so much around the holidays I broke it! I will be contacting you to buy another one. That is a GREAT little bit of business. and if the rest of you guys don't own it contact Michael and get one it is the best thing a guy can carry in his pocket. Five minutes of comedy if you are a character based performer. I'm sorry to keep mentioning the thing Michael but I just love the dang thing. It is just such a goofy and offbeat little gem. I'm a huge fan of the classic Knife Thru Coat premise.
Recently, I acquired a copy of Chap's Scrapbook (published by Magic Inc. and now OOP) and it seems the actual method we all know and love today (as performed by Wayne Dobson and the late Bob Read for example) should be credited to John Ward. Frank Chapman published Ward's effect in 1939. Chapman says during the introduction, "... And now comes another John B. Ward 'exclusive'. One of his favorite impromptu tricks. His perfected version of Knife Thru Coat." I wonder who the originator was? |

Hey, I happen to have an extra copy of the pamphlet if anyone is interested (I bought one, then I inherited one). Just a thought. PM me with an offer.
Oh, and Michael, count me as another thumbs up (pun intended) for the sausage finger. It works just about everywhere. Mark
