I use Audacity for editing music.
I use iTunes to create my playlist. I run my show right from iTunes, but you could also very easily burn a cd or make a minidisc from it once you have your show playlist created. So, the good news is....iTunes and Audacity are both free....and both can run on a pc or Mac.

Tim,
Your CD is a hit with me. I use Audacity also and created a custom CD for my show. The very first show I used this at really got a great response. As people came into the auditorium for the show, I had music playing and put an anouncement between each song. On one longer song I actually cut two annoucements into the middle. The place was noisy with talking people, but when the announcements came on, the talking stopped -- every time. Then the laughter began. It really set a great mood for the show.

One more quick question for those that have the CD, what format are the tracks in and if I want to play "spliced" trackson a CD player (that might not be MP3 compatible), will itunes or audacity convert MP3's to the required CD track format for playback on normal CD players?

Here's the scoop:
With iTunes, you can import files such as mp3's, cd's that you own, etc. You can then make your own playlist and burn a cd to play on a "normal" cd player. By the way, thanks to Magic Café member Scott Wells for the great review of my cd in this months issue of M-U-M magazine. The magazine is really looking great.

Tim, Here is a FREE plug for you CD The Show Starts before the Show starts. I just received my on 4/26/06 and I could not be more delighted to add this to my shows. What do you play for pre-show music for family audiences? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And no I do not know Tim nor do I work for his company. I found out about his Cd through my friend Duane Laflin.

Thanks Rodney. Wow...work for my company. My company is pretty small.
I'm a worker, just like all of you guys. I few years ago I hired a secretary to do all the bookings and paperwork, and it has come in handy with the few products that I have. She mails your stuff out while I'm out doing shows. The pre-show music I use depends on the crowd. For my school family night show, I usually use some fun music, such as: Up, Up Up We Are Family Celebration YMCA Numa Numa Hampster Dance I try to look for songs that are upbeat, cross generational, and fun for this type of audience. I've used so many different things over the years, but that's what I'm doing now. NOTE: I do not play that type of music for a daytime school assembly. I don't want to get the kids that excited before my show!

That is because Tim is such a good magician that he does not need upbeat music for a school assembly. I only use very little music in a school show assembly. I play 1-2 songs as they are coming in then I go into my act. I do use music througout my show for my routines.

Ahhhh...Jeff...a whole other topic. It's actually a lecture!
When I have lectured at conventions, this is what attendees are usually most interested in.....my thoughts on audience control. By the way, I just put a new section on my site called "magic conventions", where you can see some comments from pros....and lots of pics. I did it more for myself than to generate business....like an online scrapbook. If interested, check out http://www.showmethefun.com

Tim,
Will you be putting out a Before the Show Vol. 2 CD, as well? PS) If so, I've got one or two that I've used for years that you might be interested in. Rick

Rick,
Yes, there has been some talk about that. If anyone has any announcements that you would like on the next cd, email them to me privately. If I use your idea, I'll send you a complimentary cd. --Tim

I'm in the UK, I have it, I LOVE it, I use it every show I do.
If you're thinking about getting it, the best advice I can give you is to get it! Best regards Mike (not paid on commission, I just think it's a GREAT CD) |

Tim, I received your CD of "drops" last week - it is a thumbs up. Can I use everything? No, but there is enough to make me very happy.
I have several these drops CDs & downloads from a variety of places, and yours are the most useful I have seen. My only recommendation is to get with other performers, like DJs, and add some material for them and more material for adult audiences (not blue, but dealing with alcohol & such). I think this should expand your market. A good cheap place to advertise is http://WeDJ.com & http://ProDJ.com - DJ's eat this stuff up. |

Thanks CaptainKid. Great suggestions!
And hey, I can't even use everything on the cd. But I guess it's kind of like when you buy a cd of "music for magicians". Find the gems that you like that fit your show, and have fun!

Just got back from the "Magic Show" Conference in Branson.
What a great time. Here's an idea for all of you who have purchased my cd.... Duane Lafllin talked about how he used my cd in his show, and it is a great idea. He doesn't use it "before" the show. Instead, he uses in in the middle, and plays four amusing announcements in a row. When they are through, he comes back from behind the curtain and has changed his costume. He used it as an example of a way to make a small show seem bigger. Most smaller show performers don't change their costume, as they don't have dancers to distract the audience during the change. While he is "behind the curtain", it isn't down time, because the audience is being entertained. Anyway, thanks to Duane, because after hearing the announcements play, I had quite a few people buy the cd to use in their shows. That's all for now!
