I just bought 100 feet of nitinol. I have some ideas for some cool effects, but I've heard that this stuff is tempermental( sounds like temper metal..LOL)...Any tips, so I don't destroy too much of this stuff learning how to use it?
Thanks Dave

100 ft. Wow! Just a few feet of wire and a 'hobby project' book were not inexpensive a few years ago when I was thinking about creating a non-motorized moving advertising sign using nitinol.
The properties of nitinol are such that it heats when connected to a battery and contracts with considerably more force than what it takes to re expand it. Obviously the smaller the gauge, the quicker the expansion. There must be a myriad of effects that one could dream up to utilise it - especialy with a remote control. From what I recall, given normal care of thin wires, it was not too delicate or subject to unexpected breaking. |

Mmm... I have no idea what I'd do with that much "muscle wire"
I was once very into robots and had a bunch of the stuff, interesting like as a school display but never found a practical use for it... Steven |

Try this website http://www.teachersource.com/catalog/index.html Go to Advanced Science, then Nitinol memory wire. There is a paragraph on how to set and use the wire. You could make your own wiregrams. ChrisG

Slim, you wanna sell any of it off ? 100 feet seems like more than you'd ever need, but of course it's up to you !
The only thing I really know to do with it, is something along the lines of "Wiregram". The thing with a battery to heat it up is news to me, that sounds interesting though. There are some good magnets on that teachersource website. Steven, did you see the small neo beads you can make a ring out of ? Does that give you any ideas ? I'm drooling over the electromagnet too - I'm thinking that if you were able to separate the battery compartment from the rest of it, and strap that part to your belt, connected by wires of course - it wouldn't be terribly bulky, small enough to strap on your wrist, probably - yet it'd be completely controllable, and twice as strong as an M5 !

I'll check this stuff out tonight. Just need a blowtorch. I'll probably sell some of it for $20.
