I will give you the topic. You discuss.
David Blaine and Criss Angel are the Brittney Spears and Justin Timberlake of magic. OK. Go! |

LOL! I'd hardly call David - Brittney. For one he knows what he is doing, and is cultivating his career. He has found, or rather created his niche. Same for Chris. Look in a day when magicians struggle for pro positions, and for TV time, these two guys have figured it out. They have done what it takes to get the exposure. Remember the public never sees magic as magicians do. They have exposure and some popularity, and might I add, most magicians are reaping additional benefits from their preformances. When Mark was on TV magicians reaped rewards. He created a public desire to see magic, same with David C. and Doug in their times. I think too many magicians see themselves as better magicians than David or Chris, and maybe technically you are. But showbusiness is never based on technical proficiency, it is based on promotion and showmanship. I guarantee you there were better technical magicians than Thurston, Uncle Harry, or Houdini, but note who was before the public eye. I can sit in my chair on Sunday afternoon and tell every Coach in the NFL how he ought to be calling the game, but notice who is on the field getting paid more for that one game than I make in a year. Would I do magic like David or Chris, no. But then, I'm not trying to make my living doing it, they are. I guarantee you what I do for my own enjoyment is a lot different from the magic I did when I was performing on the road. On the road you do what the audience pays for, not what you like. Skill does not impress the audience, they don't know skill from a hole in the ground. They know whether or not they are being entertained. They pay for entertainment.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

I cant believe only one person responded to this. I was hoping to start a war.
My thoughts: 1) Sure Brittney and Justin can sing as can Blaine and Angel can perform magic. 2) Brittney and Justin have created a wannabe culture of pop stars...ditto for the the other two with magic. 3) It's easy to look good at what you do with an entrie crew of people in your pocket. You could take any person off the street and give them Banachek, Johnny Thompson, etc. as consultants and they could put on a heck of a show. Chunk that together with tv editing and you can create a star. Kinda like B & J have been fabricated into music stars. Should we be looking up to and promoting fabrications of the real thing? |
