Saw a magician perform a routine once where a knife is placed under one of five bags while he is not looking and then he slams the bags down one at a time revealing the last bag to have the knife under it. What is this called and where can I find references to buy this. Thanks

There are several different versions of this effect. I've used "Death Trap" for years. It's available at Hocus Pocus in California.

I have Scott Alexander's version with broken beer bottles. I haven't tried it yet, but seems cool.

You can find a version of this in John Riggs's Fat Free Mentalism under The Last of The Spike Tricks. His version uses styrofoam cups.

Patrick Kuffs has also a crushed bottle version on his Mind Stunts DVD called "Dangerous Monte"

I also love Kuffs idea and especially Scott Alexander's version. I will try it out shortly. In this routien I like the fact that you show a real glass bottel at the beginning and smash it. Then you apparently take the smashed bottle and place it on one of the four stands.
So this really is a convincer to the audience. Greetings Thomas |

Thanks, this trick even made me squirm a bit. The danger of the magician stabbing himself adds a lot to the effect. People cover their eyes and when he placed both hands over the bags, one with the knife under it and one without and then slams his hand down you almost for a second believe he might get the wrong one...
