Hello peoples,

I am in the process of designing a 30 minute mentalist show as after dinner for adults

I would like to know some resources, DVD's or books that I should look out for that will help in designing the show

effects are good but I am more interested in the

Purpose of the show
the way it builds

etc

if there are any places to start this it would help me

thank you

Well, can you tell us you level of performance - how much experience have you in mentalism? I assume you must have a good working knowledge of mentalism, to be desinging a show of this nature.

In reference the way it builds, Max Maven has written very interestingly on the subject. It seems that the best way is to have an underlying logic to the performance - there should be a reason for everything you do - are you 'psychic', gifted, using psychological principles? I personally have a 'basis' along one of these lines, and then adapt each effect to that theme - I only perform it if I can explain it (even if only to myself) through those means.

I would suggest a strong start, to get the attention, and then have each effect grow and become more impossible than the last. There should be a definite climax.

It is worth mentioning that like every good theatrical piece, there should be textur to the show. Some light moments, some quick, some funny - but there should be some variety.

Just my thoughts,

Si

Well half an hour isn't that much for a mentalism performance so I'd suggest take the strongest tools and do your best,
1-7 minutes - mind-reading routines, take your best pick.
7-20 minutes - talk about the power of paranormal communication and perform pk (any of your delight)
20-30 - telekinesis

Just my suggestion.

I just bought James Biss' book, and it is quite good. The first few effects I read are going right into my show. All his material has a purpose and flows very nicely. Definately start strong and work hard to keep their attention.

I do not know the setting of this dinner which I think is important to hit them home. If you do not know either you should check and try to link your effects to this. Or, you could build it around a "thanks for the food" theme. I would use humor in an after dinner event. I have used cooking books in book tests, wine choices in "one ahead billets" etc. Try to engage more than only a few. If you want to get to the women you could look at "common scents". Predicting the perfume choice! With some set-up you can use Chuck Hickok's effect when he try to learn the audience mind reading. Effectful, funny and engaging. It is demo'd on his web site http://www.chuckhickok.com

It is corporate market level

I am working on it now and I would like to get it up and running by next Xmas

In between now and then I'll try out a few routines in my exhisting stage show ( which is a variety Magic show)

My experience in Mentalism is from the Book tests and a few other pieces from my existing stage show that I have been doing for a few years

But I enjoy the feel of the Mentalist routines and there are a number of personal and practicle reasons as to why I want to move to mentalism.

Choosing effects is not that hard - 30 minutes isn't that long and I have a few effects already that fit well together and that build.

But an entire act needs (for me) Purpose

Then I wopuld strongly recommend Hickok's book Mentalism Incorporated. Good effects described, but even better the patter is extremely detailed and helpful. + in the early chapters advise on finding your own theme and style. And it is targeted at a corporate setting of course

Richard Osterlind's Mind Mysteries series contain some fantastic routines that could be adapted for the show in question. I would second Sfarad's show plan - a good mix of effects. Lastly,ALWAYS begin with a quick opener. With the audience's interest then captured you can progress to longer routines.

Besides reiterating ELima's advice on Chuck Hickok's Mentalism Inc. books, I would suggest Ken Weber's Maximum Entertainment for assistance in designing your show. There has been considerable discussion about this book here and doing a search will provide a number of threads that will give you a good idea if this book suits your needs.

It doesn't sound like you are concerned about finding material, but I believe the best place to start for an overview is with Osterlind's Easy to Master Mental Miracles DVD's. You get to see all the classics, performed exceptionally well. Being able to see how the routines work in performance will give you an idea whether they are right for you and how they would fit into your show. Once you find something of interest, you can research others' handlings of the effects if you want.

my two cents,
