vinsmagic Eternal Order sleeping with the fishes... 10957 Posts |
Some years ago I took my family to Las Vegas to see David Copperfield. I bought four tickets at $80 bucks a piece. The show was great. Between drinks and pictures, I spent $500 dollars. As we left the theater, Mr Copperfield was signing autographs for $15. I had just spent $500 and he wanted to squeeze another 15 bucks out of me.
I will never pay to see this crook again. vinny |

$500 FOR DRINKS AND PICTURES!? That is insane my friend. Copperfield will usually give you a free autograph if you hang out after the show.

Jakks , I waited to see Copperfield when he came out with my family. I wanted to talk to him, as did many others. Then I saw the sign saying $15 dollars.
Try to go to a dinner show to see David Copperfield and let me know what it costs you at today's prices. vinny |

A friend of mine went to see Copperfield a few years ago here in Seattle. After the show he wanted to get his autograph and say a few words to him, like, "Hi! Great show," and such. It took him nearly a half an hour after the show (plenty of time for the theatre to clear) for him to come out and sign autographs. He sat at a table with a boom box loudly blaring out music. The item you wanted signed was taken from you by one of his handlers, handed to Mr. Copperfield who then scrawled his name across it and handed it to another handler who then returned it to you. You couldn't speak to Mr. Copperfield as the music from the boom box made this impossible. My friend was less than impressed and felt that if one wanted to sign autographs one should do it right or not at all.

I guess the signing has changed since 1994 or so. I was about ten, and immediately after the show, he was sitting on a huge red and gold throne signing autographs. I brought up the Linking Ring with him on the cover, he signed it and smiled at me. I thought it was the coolest ever that he smiled at me.
However... I feel sick to my stomach when I hear the jokes and see the material in his show now. Perhaps I was young, and didn't catch the dirty humor, but PLEASE have some taste with what you include in your "family" show, Copperfield! He used to be so good with adding emotions and drama to his illusions, now I feel it's just sex and women. Please feel free to disagree, this is just my humble opinion. Justin |

Hmmm... how to put this nicely?
David is full of himself! No... that's only partly right. Truth is DC is a great guy and very personable ONCE HE GETS TO KNOW YOU. David is not overly trusting, is very shy and thus comes across as aloof, arrogant, and distant. Trust me, it's his fear of people doing it, not his ego (though he does have one of those... two actually, one about the size of Texas and the other about the size of Montana...) I know opinions and experiences such as those posted above disturb him, but it's very hard for DC to not come across that way. Just know, he really can be loads of fun and once he does let his defenses down and invites you into his world, is a very gracious host.

Darmoe,
I'm sure he is, and I sure don't want to knock Copperfield, a fellow magician. I completely understand why he's scared to let just anybody into "his world." There've been times in the past when secrets or ideas were shared with the wrong people and their opportunity for a new concept or illusion was taken away. If I were in his position, I'd be careful too. I'd just be sure to be as humble as I could be. |

What a lot of "stars" forget is that it is the public that make them what they are and that signing autographs goes with the territory.
When I first went back to magio after a long time and joined a club I was befriended by an older magician in his eighties, he offered many wise words of which "its nice to be important but more important to be nice" are just some of the advice that I heed.

I had the experience to go backstage at one of his performances a couple of years ago with a friend of mind who knew him fairly well.
Let me say this, it looked like he was ignoring my friend for the longest time, and when he did come over to talk to him and my friend introduced me to him, I shook his hand and it felt like I was shaking a limp cold fish. In my opinion, he has no personality. Also, it was one of the worst show I had ever seen him perform. On stage he looked like he just got up, the clothes he wore were a pair of jeans and tee shirt. His show had a lot of blue material in it which shocked me because of all the young kids in the audience. I don't know if this has all changed, but looking at all the other responses, I don't think it has. Spurlock

When I saw Copperfield in Vegas 8 or 9 years ago he was fantastic. Just all pluses. I am going to see his show here in Canada in about two weeks and I will give another review of him. Hopefully it will still be all pluses.

Allow me to jump in here. I'm not questioning D.C .as a performer. I think he's terriffic.
The question is why would he even want to charge money for his autograph when I just paid top dollar to see his show? Greed ,greed ,greed and more greed. vinny |

Perhaps the venue where he was performing had required it as part of the deal.
That's just a stupid guess, because I really know nothing about these kind of things.

You must understand that he is probably very busy. I can understand that he can't sit around to chat for half an hour after every show.

Vinsmagic-- I can tell you this, Best Buy now sells Copperfield's Illusion DVD for a mere $14.99. As opposed to the Concession stand at his shows which still sells it for $35.00. The exact same DVD !!!!! Greed, my friend---that's an under statement.

I just want to add my personal experiance from when I was a kid.
After waiting forever, he sat up on a high throne talking to his friends and listening to music, he didn't even look down when signing things.... his long time friend or even mother could have been in the line and he wouldn't have noticed. It felt really insulting after waiting in a line for like ever... I may have been a kid at the time, but my mother was so upset over it that my family was "boycotting Copperfield" ever since then........ I know that perhaps he was busy or tired or whatever, but let's look at it from buisness standpoint: Is it good for your long-time career that all of the die hard fans that actually stayed in the lobby forever to get a signature all leave the place disgusted with you and very mad, with some even swearing never to see Copperfield again? I think he should just not sign autographs at all if he can't be nice about it....Better to just seem busy than be rude to all the fans that want an autograph. |

Good points, MacGyver
when I waitedin line to have him sign his autograph, he signed it, but kind of stared at me, but never really smiled. I never really understood it, because I had just made him a little richer by seeing his show.

Re Justin Flom's comments about 'Sex and Women'.
I know that it may seem that from a grown up's point of view, it is all about sex, but really, the kind of sensual dancing and such can be seen in any dancing competition on G rated TV. It is just an artful expression of a part of himself, which I reckon is pretty fine. And as you said, you didn't even notice it when you were a kid. I remember David actually talking about a similar thing in an interview, where he brought in with him a picture. Now, this picture apeared to be 2 people making love, but he explained that what a child would see would be dolphins. It was actually a picture of a few dolphines, with the spacing in between looking like a love scene. I guess it is all about perspective and such. |

Well, keep in mind that he did have a super model wife to support. All that celery and bottled water has to come from somewhere!
