Original question posted: "What would you pay for a birthday party marketing course?"
My answer (and also my opinion, so don't get upset with me): I would pay nothing to someone who has to ask that question on a forum of potential buyers. It shows a lack of basic market research strategy.

I am not upset at your opinion. That is why it is YOUR opinion! As far as a "lack of basic market research strategy" goes...it was a question to see if anyone would be interested in a course like this. Again, that is YOUR opinion but I can guarantee you that if you saw the # of shows that I currently do, you would rethink that comment. No hard feelings on my part! |

Todd,
Go for it and it's better than not going. Who knows, you might hit home with a winner. If priced right, and the reviews are right, you should recover your expenses. Dennis

Thanks for the kind words Dennis! This has been a true work in progress for sometime now. I am not done with it yet but hope to be soon.

Todd is first class, as well as his routines. It would be worth the price.

I'm glad you're not angry at my opinion. I'll take a chance on expanding on what I meant. Market research is something that is done BEFORE you enter the market with your product. When you introduce your product to the potential purchasers, you should already know the answer to the question "What would they pay for it?"
I'll give you a "for instance." You probably already know about the new Children's Entertainer convention I have been working on with others. Before it was announced, we had already done our basic market research to see if it would: - be a good idea to hold it in January (yes, there are entertainers who really can't come any other time) - be a good idea to hold it in a warm place like Arizona (darn tootin' ! Not only is Arizona warm, but there has not been a magic convention held there in many years.) - could we keep the costs down for the hard working entertainers who can't afford to waste money unless they get value for it. - could we give them that value by focusing on creativity, originality and new ideas from performers they don't get a chance to see very often. and here's the part that concerns your question - how much would they be willing to pay for such a convention, and could we produce one that would not only pay our expenses, but have enough left over to make a substantial donation to a worthy cause for children (The St. Jude's Children's Hospital for Cander Research). We got answers to those questions (any many more) BEFORE committing ourselves to moving ahead with the project and before any mention of it was made publicly. That's basic market research. There's more, but that's the basic stuff.

I understand what you are saying! I have done my research on this but thought it would be interesting to get thoughts from members of Café. I knew that I would get positive and negative feedback.
MrLucky: thanks for the kind words! Let's talk by phone again soon! |

But didn't JR's original topic start off by asking, "What would you think about a new Kid Show convention?" I'm pretty sure that's how his original topic started before it was deleted? Did JR's posting show a lack of basic market research strategy by posing that question? Also, I think some of the things you're addressing were hammered out right here on the MAGIC Café, much like what Todd asked. You're confusing me. Gerry |

And another thing, just about EVERY SINGLE JR POSTING, started out by asking, "What do you think about this?" Did every one of his postings show a lack of basic market research? Gerry |

Market Research:
Are there a supply of magicians who do birthday parties? Yes, most new magicians and many seasoned pros still do birthday parties. Use local magic clubs and even the Café statistics to see the proportional differences in magic people are interested in. For instance the "views" on cards (201,000), Mentalism (114,000), Coins (85,000), and Children (55,000) indicate interest in a topic. Four times as many people are interested in cards as opposed to entertaining children. The pool is even less on these entertainers interest in marketing. In the magic industry what book is considered a best seller? Generally speaking if you sell 500 then it is a good book, if you sell 1,000 it is a best seller. How does a marketing book sell compared to a book on birthday party magic? Unfortunately a magic book outsells a marketing book because not every one in the birthday party business takes marketing seriously, out side of the basics, small ad, business cards, work of mouth, etc. Who would this book appeal too? Generally the pros that are full time are interested in new method to increase business. If they can get one job from that material the book paid for it self. What needs to be done to make this book sell? Good reviews will put this book on it's way to a best seller list. Consider having Genii, Magic Magazine, Linking Ring and KIDabra Journal book reviewers comment on this book. It's a double edge sword. if the book is not worthy of a good review its selling potential goes down proportionally. Even without marketing research, you might want to consider leaving something for prosperity, your legacy related to children entertainment. There are many reasons for writing this book. And, just as many who will be angry at you for doing so from those who haven't written a book. This is a life’s work, a dream that can be a reality. Even if you sell ten, there will be 10 people you enriched their lives in some way. You touched their soul, at least subconsciously. Good Luck, and I will be waiting to see the index, and read those reviews. Dennis

Todd released a couple of kidshow info marketing products, that sold out.
To keep up with info about Todd's products, its best to attend KIDabra or be friends with him on Facebook. As you can see, he's not really active on the Magic Café any more. If I recall, he sold the products at his lecture at KIDabra, and also sold a few extras through connections on Facebook. http://www.toddmckinneyproducts.com - Donald

Donald;
This thread was pushing a course on me having the ability of dominating the birthday party market in my area. I looked on his website and I see sold out programs and a program on School shows. I wonder how the birthday party course has progressed |

I've purchased a number of marketing programs over the years, but most have major problems. Most don't bridge the knowledge gap between the producer and purchaser. Others overwhelm the purchaser or otherwise cause them not to act on the information.
I remember one program that advocated using an inexpensive ad in a parenting magazine. I looked into the local parenting magazine and the small ads were 10 times what he said that he paid. It was a case of "it doesn't work here". It's too bad that Eric Paul isn't still around. What I was able to glean from one of his courses set off a light bulb in my head. Sometimes, one little concept can make a difference. |

Brad Ross might have the rights to sell some of Eric Paul's Stuff.

Todd created a product called "Creating a Celebrity Status With Your Clients", which he sold at KIDabra in 2009 and 2011. He had a few extra copies that he sold via friends at Facebook. Then he sold out both times of the copies he had made.
On the website, this is called "Celebrity Course". I don't have this product, but I watched discussions online. It's my understanding that he covered birthday shows and other shows in this course. That is what I was talking about. - Donald

I looked at one program that was sold to increase bookings, the information that was discussed was so complex and cumbersome along with the added expense of producing the material considered necessary, that following the advice will keep you so busy that you would not have time to do the show,

Brad Ross used to sell several of Eric Paul's products, when Eric was alive. When Eric passed away (late December 2009), that was no longer the case.
I bought my copy of the "2009 Eric Paul Super Conference" DVD set from Brad Ross, which was released by Brad in early 2010, after Eric had passed away. It's a great product. I was there, and I also bought the DVDs. As far as I know, that is the only Eric Paul product that Brad is still selling. - Donald
