Yo... flourish dude... exactly what flourish are you doing in the little picture... and what the heck is Geoff Williams squeezing?
My goal in magic is to entertain people by fooling them. I buy magic books and new tricks because I enjoy messing around with them. I could have worse hobbies or pursuits... drugs, alcohol, smoking, chasing loose woman, but instead I search coin shops for smooth silver dollars from the 1800's. You know.. the kind that don't talk. I buy boxes of decks of cards at Sam's. I was recently looking through my magic room for a trick I had made. It was a date book based on the Aaronson stack. I own Fortune tellers book of days... same trick. I think it is a well made gimmick, but the little book I scribbled in works better for me. I don't know why. It just feels right. During the search I was stunned at all the c**p I had bought and never opened. The books I had to have at the time and now still had the celophane on them. Granted much of this was purchased on the street at Abbott's or at some auction. So they were all good deals at the time. And I did remind myself clutter is the curse of a creative mind. It reminded me of what it was like when I was starting out. I had to have every new thing. Many I could not afford. I did realize though, over the years magic has paid for itself. How many pursuits can say that... certainly not drugs, smokes, booze or broads. Granted... in the early years magic did not pay for itself. Part of that had to do with where I was at in magic. I had that Frank Sinatra attitude towards things.. "..he who dies with the most toys wins." or books or effects. That's where my first regular magic earnings went... to fuel the fire. Those time have changed. As my performing style became more defined I looked for items that suited me and how I wanted to present myself. I went from "that's cool I really want to see how it's done." to "that's cool... I wonder if it's right for me?" or "I wonder if it will work in walk around?" or "How will the spectator perceive it?" I am now less a consumer and more a distrubutor. My goal has always been the same... I now arrive at it differently.

I have to disagree, JR. The right broad can pay for herself a few times over.
Plus, you forgot to mention "the box" you have of things you have but haven't used... |

Well Garrett...it is not exactly a box...it is more like a room.
Regarding the broad...you are correct...but being a pole vaulter it's understandable.

My goal is to have fun and make people happy. And although I agree partially with the old saying that a pro shows the same tricks to different people. At the same time I wouldn't want to be performing the same tricks day after day, year after year, for the next 50 years! I'm sure no one was implying to do just that, but its also nice to be able to learn new stuff well, and incorporate it into your routine. It doesn't mean you have to buy every new book or video or every new gimmick that comes out. Although you should be able to guess ahead of time if a certain effect will be right for you before buying it.
For myself, if I hear about a trick that is a "must have" or is one of those "all the pros have one of these". I could care less if it is not something that suits me or would be something that I would enjoy performing. Anyways, to get back to my other goal... I would like to come out with my own trick that is so great people will be talking about it for years to come. So in the future when we all use computers and read message boards from little monitors sewn into our eyes balls, I want people to say "DaveB came out with that great effect, so if you buy one, buy the DaveB version!" |
