For several years, Todd Karr has amazed the magic world with the spectacular, insightful books from his company The Miracle Factory and is now bringing the same innovative quality to the magic products of his Black Rabbit Magic (Mona Lisa McComb, Pegasus, and Mindreading 101).
Todd’s lavishly produced books include Teller’s House of Mystery (2005), The Secret Ways of Al Baker (2003), Mystery School by Eugene Burger and Jeff McBride (2003), S. H. Sharpe’s Neo-Magic Artistry (2000) and Art and Magic (2003), The Annals of Conjuring (2001), The Silence of Chung Ling Soo (2001), Eugene Burger’s Chicago Visions (2004), and Stuart Cramer’s Germain the Wizard (2002). His first major work was S. H. Sharpe’s Words on Wonder in 1984, with an introduction by Doug Henning. He is also author of Backyard Magic, a unique children's book of magic with nature (over 60,000 copies sold by Scholastic Books); co-editor of the Hermetic Press translation of the 1584 Old French magic text Clever and Pleasant Inventions. Behind the words and products lies a long career as a professional magician. After studies at the University of Southern California (journalism) and the Sorbonne (art history and French), Todd became a full-time professional, performing stage, close-up, comedy, and illusions as a bilingual magician in Paris for eight years. Todd’s European engagements included top nightspots in Paris and Monte Carlo, such as the Casino de Monte Carlo, the Monte Carlo Sporting Club, the Princess Grace Theatre, the Casino de Paris, the Folies-Bergère, and the Cirque d’Hiver, as well as regular TV appearances in France and Monaco, where he had the honor of performing several times for Monaco’s royal family. Forthcoming books from The Miracle Factory are Roy Benson by Starlight (with Levent), John Fisher’s Cardini book, Jonathan Pendragon’s Grand Illusion, and the long-awaited Gaetan Bloom volume. In addition to his Miracle Factory creations, Todd writes regularly for the major magicians’ magazines. His French translations include Christian Fechner’s massive The Magic of Robert-Houdin and its sequel volume, as well as The Award-Winning Rope Magic of Francis Tabary in 2005. He has also lectured numerous times for the Los Angeles Conference on Magic History and the Magic Collectors’ Weekend. In 2004, he was awarded the Milbourne Christopher Foundation’s Literary Award and the Society of American Magicians’ Biography Award in 2002. Todd lives in Marina del Rey, California, with his wife Gina, a vocalist/actress/model, and their children Sierra, Jovann, and Schuyler.
