I agree Mario. Top shelf stuff from a top shelf busker.

Great stuff. Even part time buskers can learn something from this one. And as an indoor busker(if there is such a thing, I think there is), I especially enjoyed seeing him in the trade show environment.

I ordered it and am really glad I got it. He combines the best of Gazzo, Cellini, and others and teaches the art of busking. If you had to have just one DVD this would be it.

I got mine at diamonds magic. Eddie (the owner) is a great guy and has tons of great magic and more than a few lost treasures.

I got mine from Hank Lee, watched the first DVD of the 2 DVD set last night at Oh-Late-Thirty and can only say this - DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!
It's too good for the average magician! I want to keep these goodies for myself and don't want every kid on my block trying to do this stuff, verbatim - which is what will happen - and flubbing it all to heck. This is professional-level stuff, done by a REAL, WORKING PRO, who knows what he's talking about, in no, uncertain terms. He not only talks tricks, but placement, dealing with other acts, the draw (for time), pulling the crowd, bits of business, and his teaching style will NOT play well for a beginner - he actually assumes that you already KNOW something about magic! Level - intermediate to advanced due to assumed knowledge of material and basic sleights. Quality of video - Good. Some lighting issues, but it is filmed on location in a documentary style, so that's almost to be expected. Down ticks - the pickpocketing instruction would have been better if he had used a live assistant intstead of a coat on a hanger. He also does not go into detail on the watch steal mechanics, but focuses on the psychology, which will probably disappoint people who are looking for technique, rather than method. His teaching style is clear, but the silks could have been better taught with two different colored scarves, to better show the handling, but even so, his explanation and demonstration is pretty clear. That's really nitpicking on my part. Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5. One of the best DVDs in my collection - based on watching only ONE of the discs in the set of 2. More comments to follow. I was quite disappointed. Pete can obviously go out and work the material, but the street act was very disappointing. It's a carbon copy of Gazzo's act right down to his lines.

I was with Gazzo the other night and he speaks highly of Wardell. I've seen Wardell work, live, and he is terrific... similar to Gazzo, but who does the cups and balls on the streets without the Gazzo influence? After all, he's put it all in print.
Gazzo is now in Las Vegas and maybe will be moving to L.A.

Peter brings up this point on the DVD where he says he did do the Gazzo stile show 15 yrs ago or so. He also tips Gazoo with huge credit and respect. I think he has worked hard to make it his own. Yes there are lines that we or share and that have been around before any of us were even born.
For one he does not start out by handing out his cups but he starts with MA routine he does flash the bottom cup empty. I think this is quite a week start, not the production of the balls but the fact he does not hand the cups out. Which does serve to say "nothing hidden hear". On the other hand Peter does make this work very well for him, as he weaves into ambitious card routeen before hand. (This whould not work for me as I love handing out the cups at the beggininng.) He does the production of the small balls then he goes back to the cards leaving the C&B on the table. By the time he comes back to the cups the lay audience would have forgotten they have not seen them, infact some will think they have. The time and space does enforce the bottom cup flash. This does make his routeen very new-nick, your not going to be able to copy him in a hurry. I think this DVD with that said will force you to be your self. Mario |

I also couldn't believe the adverts billing the Silk work as worth the price of the DVD. It was pretty weak, the explanation and the routine.

Shaun,
The silks were weak in what way? I would be curious to hear your experience as a street performer. Because from my perspective it was engaging, easy to follow, entertaining, and short. It seemed to be constructed perfectly for the street venue. Keep in mind that everything before the cups and balls is a come along or a build. Or, something you will cut a short show loose with when you can tell that the audience will not be able to stand for a whole show usually because of the weather, too hot, too cold, about to rain, etc. This being said that silks routine fits perfectly. I thought it was great. You could build with it if you were having a rough time stopping them or close with it if need be if you were doing a smaller show. This DVD was designed for people who were interested in busking. If you were looking for a full explanation of the silks for a stage setting there are much better sources. For the street Wardell really shows you the bones of a routine that could be scaled by a performer to fit anywhere in a show. To a guy like me that is gold. Remember the handkerchief routine was not invented by Slydini. Slydini adapted a version he saw a street performer do (and made it a classic). The performer that inspired Slydini was Charlie Edwards. Mr. Edward's routine is in Lewis Ganson's Routined manipulation finale(thank you Mark Lewis). That routine uses cotton handkerchiefs and ends with a rope escape. I have been doing it using bandannas. Believe it or not, they work MUCH better than the nylon Slydini style silks. For the street the Edward's or Wardell routines are far better for the street venue than the Slydini routine (in my opinion YMMV). Because they allow the trick to be a personality piece. On the street they have to like and remember you. That's my two cents. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! I do the silk routine and have done for some time. When I see "worth the price of the DVD" next to the effect, I think perhaps it's going to add something to the handling or the presentational angle. IMO, it did neither of these. The work on building the crowd and seeing Pete work the crowd were "worth the price of the DVD". But then again, the same working and building of the crowd can be seen on Gazzo's "uncensored" and to much better effect. I think the DVD is over priced and a little thin on original content. Peter seems like a genuinely nice bloke, so please do not take this as a personal attack on him. |

The real strength of the DVD set is not in the effects used, but rather in Pete's skill in working with real people in a real honest environment.
Pete does use some lines that Gazzo uses but he does not, in my opinion attempt to imitate Gazzo. I think Cellini notes on his DVD 3 that there are only a certain number of lines out there, and that if they work for you then use them. In terms of the silks I actually prefered Pete's quick in and out to Bill Malone's routine in front of the rent a crowd mob. Incidently, anyone notice when Pete offers to explain the ball joke again for the tourists the woman in the background taking a stumble. Just fits into my pie in the face humour, very funny! |

I also stand by the fact that it was incorrectly advertised because the silk work is not worth £40. The crowd management/building ideas maybe, but certainly not the silks. The lines I agree with you on now, I think the lines of Gazzo's he does use are not the most offensive ones and are generally very funny. Sadly I missed the stumbler, I'll have to re watch it before I post it to the buyer! |
