I'm looking for a memory book or system. I'm specially interested on improving my memory for remembering people's names, which is very important in the entertaiment world of magic. Any recommendations?

When I seen Alain Nu's lecture years ago,he remembered about 50 names and it was stunning,I had to ask and he refered me also to Harry Loraine's books....

I've used Harry Lorayne's systems extensively for names/faces, school, business, phone numbers, etc., and I definitely recommend his books (especially The Memory Book).
For another take on remembering people's names, check out some of Dominic O'Brien's work. Instead of associating the name with a prominent feature of the face (Lorayne's technique), Dominic tends to associate the person with a place that he has already associated with someone else who has a specific name. For example, let's assume that a friend of mine named Bob works at a barber shop. Then one day I meet someone named Bob during an interview, and I wish to remember this person's name. I would visualize this new Bob working at the barber shop where my friend Bob works. Thus, the method is based on location rather than facial features. I like Lorayne's techniques better, but that's just what works best for me. Keep in mind that Dominic O'Brien has won the world memory championship several times! Richard |

Amazing Memory Demonstration in Osterlind, Vol 6, Easy to Master Mental Miracles. Also Corinda, to which he refers.

Any of the Lorayne books (they all cover the same material, but organized and presented differently) would do you just fine. The better ones, IMHO, are the Memory Book and How to Develop A Super-Power Memory. The "Page-a-Minute" Memory Book is also fine. Lorayne is the one who used to go on Carson and have the whole audience stand up, then he'd tell them their names one by one and have each one sit down as his/her name was given. In short order, the whole audience would be sitting. So I think Lorayne would be great for your purposes...and it will also enable you to do any sort of memory demonstration you want (like the one in Corinda, which is essentially the one Richard Osterlind does). Lorayne's methods are nothing new -- they're not much different than the ones taught hundreds of years ago -- but his teaching methods are nonpareil.
The Dominic O'Brien method has a much steeper learning curve but is ultimately more powerful. If you decided to really make a study of memory methods and perhaps even do much more elaborate memory presentations, it'd be worthwhile studying him. But for most memory purposes, a Lorayne book will be faster and easier to learn, and more than powerful enough. BTW, if you check out the "new and used" section of Amazon, or Bookfinder.com, you can probably find any of the Lorayne books for a buck or less (not including shipping). --Josh |

I have used Harry Lorayne's systems for cards, people and mentalism for over 30 years in daily performance.
His system is the best and once learned you will use it to your very powerful advantage in mentalism. STAY MYSTICAL |

Lorayne is often mentioned on the forums here in conjunction with memory and is, by virtue of his also being a magician, a natural source to refer too.
Another very good and no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point source is Tony Buzan and his book Use Your Perfect Memory : Dramatic New Techniques for Improving Your Memory (ISBN:0452266068). The techniques are certainly not "new", but then neither are the techniques found in Lorayne or O'Brien, but they are all undoubtedly dramatic and powerful. All of the techniques require significant practice, especially if you've never done memory work before, so don't fool yourself into thinking that it will be easy. With practice comes reward, and it is well worth it. But there is, fortunately or unfortunately, no shortcut. As was mentioned earlier, the Lorayne books as well as the the Buzan book are all available used for very little through such sources as amazon.com. Buy them all, for in addition to the memory techniques themselves you'll also get ideas for presentations and use of your newly improved memory from both sources. -R |
