I'm 16, and perform in high school too. But the people you have to watch out for the most, is the teachers. They took 3 or 4 card decks from me this year! (I never got them back). I think I need to learn how to disappear .

It seems you are more or less asking how to be taken seriously on the streets.
I think it is hard to give a specific example of what might work without knowing what type of area you are performing in as well as the culture there. My first instinct (I have been asked this several times) was to say it is nearly impossible for a 12 year-old to be taken seriously. Why? The chances of you being written off as "cute" rather than a true performer are very high. You must be careful to not be "cute", rather then a real magician. Cute just doesn't cut it for most people, they can go pet a puppy for free. A street performer needs to entertain, first and foremost. However, contrary to my first beliefs, I think it is possible to be taken seriously. I have seen many broad-throwers (3 card monte workers) who are young making money. In this situation people are probably drawn in because they think they can easily beat a kid trying to trick them. But, nonetheless, they do make money. In other words, you need to construct an image that works. You need some reason that they should feel they can be entertained by a "kid". An example of this may be constructing an image where, say, your father was a great magician and taught you everything he could before he was forced to leave the country. That is obviously just a brainstorm, but something that makes you legitimate would probably do the trick. Hope this gives you some ideas! -GDN |

If you are cute, USE IT!! people will watch the cute kid try to do a trick, olay it up, then, wow them. Don't try to be a grown up if you are not. Go the other way, be extra cute. Even if it is an act, they don't need to know that!
Work on the magic and be willing to change the act. old is on it's way, you can't stop it, so be ready for it, but don't rush it.

Are you a member of a magic ring? That is a great place to perform and get experience in front of other people.

I find that if there's something detracting from your magic then you should build it into your act. If you're young, then make jokes about it, dumb yourself down, and then when you do the sort of magic that us old crownies are perfroming, they'll be even more blown away because they won't be expecting it. Just a thought!

Hey. My name is Ben and I am 17... I started magic only about 3 and a half years ago. I live in Southern California, so I have a lot of people to compete with. The best advice that I can give you on performing is again... do it EVERYWHERE... although this does mean you're gonna get a whole lot of rejection you have to build up your character as a performer somehow...
I don't agree with what other people say at all about the cute thing... I was 13 years old and performing from table to table in a local resturaunt.. at first it seemed, as I was the cute little kid.. but when they saw my magic they reconsidered. Of course for you to be in this position also you must just go out, perform, pardon the expression but screw everyone who thinks you suck and keep on going, you'll get there. I guarantee it. Now I work at Houdini's Magic Shop and have two paying resturaunt gigs a week. You just gotta go out there and do it... not caring what anyone thinks of you.
