TGENTLE,
I checked with George Robinson at Vikings and confirmed yours is not the one I am producing. He gave me much inffo on the German guy who has created this effect and then widely copied by many people all over the world and released in the market. The one you get is still this version. The one I am producing is similar but solves a new problem that all 4 digits can be freely chosen and you do not preset any chosen numbers or force any numbers on the spectators. It is very strong and both the method and technical workings are not exactly the same as the one Viking is carrying. I called George to ensure my new creation is not the same one he is carrying that I have reinvented something that has been done before. With this lock my presentation (has done shows with the prototype) is that I locked someone's ring on it and no body remembers the combination. I showed the lock to the ring owner and spins the lock to different random numbers and it still cannot be opened. I ask her to select 4 random people from the audience and each name a digit. The ringowner holds the lock, dial these 4 numbers on the lock, and open the lock herself to retrieve the ring. I do not touch it at all before and after the correct numbers are named. This fries those who know the other trick lock ten times more. Alan

The routine from RICHARD OSTERLIND's EASY TO MASTER MIND MIRACLES vol.2 was excellent and very easy to perform. Everything looks very very clean to the spectators. Plus, many spectators can be involved in that routine. I've done that effect a couple of times to different audiences and they really liked it. The reactions were great.

Has anyone built a DaVinci Code themed effect using the newly available Cryptex?
FYI, a Cryptex is a cylindrical combination lock that has a chamber inside. Some of the more expensive recreations allow you to set your own combination.

That was great! I missed your post on it the first time around. Thanks for repeating it.

Thanks. If you don't want to fall into the media marketing trap, just Google the word Cryptex. There are others who make similar items.
Be careful, some of these only have two letters operational. The dials spin but they really don't do anything. If they show a picture of it opened, count the notches on the inner mechanism. The replicas made for the Da Vinci Code movie contest only had two working letters. If you're not careful, you'll pay full price for the cheap model and not know the difference until it's too late.

Really....I was not aware of that. Will google for other options, this one was a little pricey.

People are dumping the two letter models on eBay like crazy ever since the contest ended. You can pick one up rather cheaply now. If I didn't mention earlier, the two letter models might allow for a multiple word solution as long as two of the letters are the same.

And if I remember correctly, it's only the two last letters that need to be fixed (and you CAN apparently change the two letters needed).
I was toying with the idea of having a word selected from a list, but you could only allow the volunteer a brief look at the list, or just not worry about them noticing. The contest cryptexes are set to open with the word "GRAIL," but I quickly realized that "DEVIL" would work too. The use of a "reverse dictionary" would help find other words that fit the pattern. Although I notice the ones selling on Ebay are still almost the same price as the fully-working Mini-Cryptex version that you can buy from Noble Collection.

I noticed that too. With *only*(?) 10,000 giveaway models out there, they somehow believe they're worth something to collectors. I'm not sure I have a use for any of them yet, but the two letter version has possibilities as you just mentioned...
Perhaps words on index cards instead of a single list? Something to help keep all the words from being visible all at the same time? Describe them with synonyms sort of like you did the Night/Knight thing but moreso? "Dark, Nighttime, Hmm I wonder if they mean Dark night, or maybe Dark Knight, or... Dark is too short a word, try Night and see what happens..."

On the fully-functional Mini Cryptexes, you could always file down whichever notches you wished to make those dials "wild."
That would give you even more flexibility in composing a list of words. If the commonalities were simply the second and fourth letters, that might hide the principle even better.

Does anyone know if the dream lock would allow for the following to occur.
A padlocked box is held in introduced by the performer. He then goes his routine, in my case, this is a memory routine using the RGM techniques Luke Jermay has taught. Basically the spectator is asked to think of an object, I then make them forget what this object is. Effect Over. From here, I would have them open the padlock, but not before they suddenly remember what their "freechoice" of item is, they open the box, and find the object inside. Apologies for the vagueness but this is a pet routine. So basically, can the padlock lock a box up and then get handed out into the audience. |

I would actually like to know the answer to this same question.
Can the lock be used to lock up a box, and be handled by the audience?

Ah... not familiar with it.. I have a Grismer lock and in this context the examinability depends on how it's used- but essentially, yes...
