Hello ... Does anyone know who out there is making a blooming orange tree that has the butterfly end?
I think Ricky Jay has one and that's it... |

John Gaughan made that one. I make one that is more stage sizes but no butterfly ending. the butterflies are tough to see onstage. Remember Ricky Jay is working in a club or parlor situation.
More information on my version is on the website. richrd

Call John and ask him what he would charge to make one. I know that he has made more than one of these.

It's worth remebering that what John will make you will be an historically accurate prop - not necessarily one that will meet the demands of modern touring /performance (i've seen John have problems with his own model being tempremental) and you would do better to get a modern build version that will withstand the knocks and bumps?

Can the plans for this be purchased? I would love to see a demo if available.

BTW, I may have worked out after the first of the year a new model that I have been commissioned to make.
It will be collector's piece but it will be workable. I might add it will NOT be inexpensive. To my knowledge there are not plans for the Houdin model of tree anywhere. Richard

As I always wanted to perform this miracle - I did some research. Today I would not try to rebuilt that genious clockwork mechanism. In the hobby miniature industry you can buy tiny electric engines to operate the leaves (which hide the oranges in the beginning). Then you can program the moving of the leaves. This will result in a much more bionic appearance.

Out of curiosity, did this come before the new movie, "The Illusionist"?

Right! The blooming orange tree was created by Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, who wrote in his book, Secrets of Conjuring and Magic on pages 31 - 32:
Quote:
In the month of July, 1845, an entertainment was opened in the Palais-Royal under the title of Soir,es Fantastiques. At these entertainments, the originator exhibited certain illusions which, not only by reason of the manner of their working, but of the principles whereon they were based, inaugurated a new era of conjuring. These were the Second Sight, the Arial Suspension, the Inexhaustible Bottle, the Mysterious Portfolio, the Crystal Cash-box, the Shower of Gold, the Wonderful Orange Tree, &c. He also wrote the following in his book Memoirs of Robert-Houdin on page 179: Quote:
The next was a mysterious orange-tree, on which flowers and fruit burst into life at the request of the ladies. As the finale, a handkerchief I borrowed was conveyed into an orange purposely left on the tree. This opened and displayed the handkerchief, which two butterflies took by the corners and unfolded before the spectators. The orange tree is mentioned several other places in that book. Professor Hoffman (Angelo Lewis) wrote the following account in Modern Magic, which was first published in 1876: Quote:
Houdin's Orange Tree was a capital trick, and, although exceedingly simple in its mechanism, produced the most startling effects. Houdin borrowed a handkerchief, which he burnt, or rather which he led the audience to think he burnt, at the sacrifice of a duplicate, in front of a plant placed in a box upon a table, which, at word of command, gradually began to bloom. White blossoms were seen to emerge from four or five different shoots. These disappeared, giving place to oranges, which Houdin removed from the tree and distributed among his audience, with the exception of one, which he left on. This one opened, and out from it sprang two butterflies, and in the middle of the orange was found the burnt handkerchief. There are no plans for this in these books.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Actually, the orange predates even Houdin, though he made it famous. It goes back to the time of Fawkes. Houdini's "Unmasking Robert Houdin" points out this fact.

Hello Richard,
Who is the "Fawkes" that you refer to in your post? Do you have a first name or something more to go on that I might do some research? |
|||||||||
Pete Biro 1933 - 2018 18558 Posts |
Guy Fawkes, old Faire performer in England... read your history books, that's where you will see his name. I think he the same bloke the Brit's celebrate on Guy Fawkes Day.

Thank you Pete.
If it is the Guy Fawkes he was born just up the road from where my parents live (obviously not at the same time however!). This will certainly be some very interesting research. I had know idea that the guy who plotted to blow up our Houses of Parliament was a magician! |
