Spend a life dealing with other people's problems, no laughter, just everydau domestics, fighting, child beating, stealing, killing, and that sort of stuff...
Do you think a little fun and laughter in their life would do them wonders? Yes, I know because I've delt with racisim, discrimination, death, and to forget that all for a joyous time with kids laughing and having fun is what life ia all about. In essence, Magic is a life saver!

Dennis has it right...as usual. A sense of humor...even the typical "Gallows Humor"...is the thickest armor a police officer, EMT or firefighter can carry. It protects the individual's emotional being. As a homicide investigator, I was called out to cover the scene of a fellow officer, and friend, who had committed suicide while sitting in his patrol car. The uniform cops securing the scene, also friends, said "Well, at least his aim has finally improved." Civilians might have seen that as a rude, hurtful comment. For cops...it's simply a way of dealing with the pain they see daily.
Sometimes, our insane practical jokes on one another were all that pulled us through some pretty tough times. The stories I could share!!! Those who sit...and are allowed to sit...and wallow in their depression or negative emotions are the ones who inherently wind up swallowing their guns or falling into the souless pits of alcoholism or family abuse. As for magic...as I rose to leadership positions, I would teach bits of simple magic like the French Drop and various passes to my junior officers. Emergency Service people deal with hysterical and frightened children and adults. They face angry, defensive individuals regularly. It is amazing to me how much something as simple as pulling a coin or a stick of gum from a person's ear can relax a situation...calm a child...stop a fight...by simply redirecting a person's thoughts or fears. In the 80's, there was a program called "Officer Friendly" sponsored by Sears that would visit the schools in an effort to humanize the police officer and firefighter to the children. To remove fear and enhance respect for officers. Magic was a major help in breaking through the wall and reaching these children...and teachers...and parents. I had an officer who was a wannabe ventriloquist. Had a dummy in full uniform that he named Paddy. He was the world's WORST ventriloquist...and insisted on using this AWFUL phony Irish brogue for his character...and sometimes forgot to drop the brogue when he used his own voice. He was absolutely horrible...but he made people laugh WITH him and his dummy. It worked for him and he was a hit with the teens. For the Emergency Services Worker, these aren't so much hobbies as one more tool for reaching out to the public they protect in a positive manner. God bless and watch over those who risk their lives daily for mere pennies... because they care. Skip

Have you ever wondered how much water a 260 balloon will hold? A couple of my sergeants (we called them the Blues Brothers because they looked and acted so much like that famed duo) tried to bean me with a booby trapped water balloon one night. Booby trap failed...and my excellent fingerprinting skills traced the balloon back to the two culprits. Next night (Graveyard Shift) I filled two black 260's with water and curled them up on the driver seats of their patrol cars...while they were both inside filling out paperwork.
I called in a "huge bar fight" from a payphone next to the station house as if I was the manager...one of these guys' favorite responses. They came flying out of the station, jumped into their cars and water FLEW everywhere. They just sat there staring at their windshields knowing they'd been had. The fact that the desk sergeant and I were literally rolling on the ground (we were laughing so hard we couldn't stand up) was all the proof they needed. They got even with me...and the war escalated...but that's a story for another day. :o) Skip

Funny this topic should come up because I was at a bar here in miami a few weeks ago performing a couple of casual psychic type effects for fun as I usually do for friends and ended up having a really long conversation about magic and mentalism with a miami dade cop. And he's not the first one I've met who's into magic. I'm not sure though, that there are more cops into magic than people in other careers.

I"m currently in the army, and work as Military Intelligence. I did investigative work also for the MPs. I tell you though, my time spent in Iraq definitely gave me the opportunity to hone my skills. Not much to do out there unfortunately.

Magic as a hobby represents a great form of escape - a chance to sit alone, or with a group of decent people (the brotherhood) - and forget about work for a while. Well that's my view

When you consider what so many cops go through on a daily basis, particularly in the big crazy cities, there's not much magic in the human behavior they encounter. Dennis put it best:

But that is funny! |

Dennis has it right.
For me though a helping push to being a professional was being hurt quite bad at work. 2 1/2 years of physical therapy later and bam there ya go. Nothing better to do but practice and practice. Luckily, (yea luckily) I was pretty young at the time. After therapy no way to go back to what I did, and since NOBODY had tried to kill me ever when doing magic, I stuck with it. I had worked part time till then but what the heck why not just keep going.
