Dick Williams book, Lights!-Cameras!-Magic!, might be worth a look.
Its subtitle is 'a guide to performing magic on television' but it seems more like a snapshot from a different era. Still a useful reference tool though.

I suspect the Dick Williams book will be of limited use in a street context.

Best effects for tv shooting, I will say the best camara shot. Working with a 3 camara studio I kept the frount camara on wide and alway on when the Magician was performing
when the magician told the story or talk to the audiences then I had my editor to switch to Cam 2 or 3. As for Magic effects, In my opinion the magicians that do effects with music always look great. Like to add that every magicians that came on the show are all fantastic Magicians.

I go on TV live this Monday. If I remember from the WWF spectator days, the lights are real bright so there shouldnt be any problem with reading effects (CT etc) I would hope.

I was wondering if I will be able to walk away from the host to go to my carry bag during an effect (which Im not suppose to be looking while they do or write something)?

My time is only 6 minutes and I have a good idea of possible effects but any help appreciated! I mostly perform mentalism and PK.

You could allways use Svengali Deck for mentalism effects and its easy to do also. This could be youre first trick, cause as I said it`s easy to perform, so you can use it to make youreself comfortable and btw it Gets allways a huge reactions too Smile

Candini, I'm wondering how your show went on Monday. Over the past 5 years I have become a semi regular guest on a local TV station. I have performed just about everything I can think of or think up. For the most part I go on the air to professionally entertain/irritate children, so I don't perform a lot of mentalism or PK effects. I have found that short, visual effects get the best reaction. While a lot of kids performers will tell you not to perform sucker tricks at kids shows, they go over extremely well on TV. The camera loves emotion and the more you can get from your spectators while your on the air the better. Also, make sure you leave enough time at the end to give yourself a plug before they cut to a commercial.

Derrick,

Thanks for asking. It went by so fast! And they were real concerned with plugging me and website. The little interview lasted about 2 minutes and I had 4 min to do my thing. Only three effects, spoon/fork bends, voodoo doll and popeye deck. I cam out at end and did one more effect.

How did you go about getting asked back on the show and how long in between first and second appearence? The producer told me I did a great job (I sent a thank you and told her I had some ideas for future appearences if any). She said she wanted to hear them so I emailed her and waiting. I know they work by scheduling short notice. It was three months after my 2nd letter to them before they asked for a demo.

I also was thinking about some kids effects for summer and put this in my email. Afterwards, I thought about Fraidy Cat Rabbit. Boy, if I get asked back on, I will certainly PM you.

Thanks

Sounds like things went well. I only do one trick per show now. I started doing a my spot with the local weatherman over five years ago. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time. He was visiting a new local school each week on Friday mornings. After my first appearance, I became part of the "Breakfeast with Tom" morning crew. I'm lucky because our channel is #1 in the market and it really is an amazing amont of publicity. Absolutely the bomb for bookings. We no longer do a show every Friday like we did during the first few years but we still do about half a dozen shows each spring and each fall. I'm constantly looking for an effect that I can do in less than an minute since with live TV you never know how much time you will get. I do know that you can use up you best material very quick and then be left desperately trying to find something with the same punch week to week. It can be tough.
