You're asked to do magic on the sidewalk; you have a deck in your hand...what trick do you show.
I think that we have been in this situation many times and I have always had a problem with this scenario because I know so many tricks its hard for me to chose one. My first trick is now the ACR that I created for spectators. Just wondering what your first trick would be. |

Perhaps Biddle Trick, or if my deck had a duplicate I'd do Here then There
Your own answer leads to another question: Do you have an ACR created for someone else than spectators?

I do my version of a TnR, i.e. I may not use the deck in my hand...
I carry around the things needed for the TnR in my wallet, i.e. accessible at all times |

I almost ALWAYS open with Bill Malone's Favorite Opener, or my Version of Red Hot Mama. It's Quick Direct, and POWERFUL. I've said this before BUT when a card changes WHILE BETWEEN THE PALMS OF A SPECTATOR, they FREAK !!! They CANNOT recover from that. Best of all it's SO EASY TO DO !!! Ed, (Eddini).

"My favourite opener" is excellent, although I don't see why a double lift shouldn't be used as opposed to Bill Malone's particular (and angle-prone) technique.

Without A Net from Korem Without Limits by Danny Korem. Basically, selected card jumps out of deck and performs multiple somersaults before landing between the fingertips.

Well, it depends on several things:
One: Who the audience is. If it's a group of old men, I'm going to pick a different trick then I would if its was a group of 7 and 8 year olds or 18 year old girls. Second: What mood I'm in. If I'm feeling fat and sassy Ill pick a different trick then I would if I felt lean, mean, and green (which is how I usually feel...). Third: Intangibles. G-force (g. Wilson) is one I do a lot. Its funny, and very magical. If I want to be more serious, or if its an older group, I'll do one of two mentalism routines: cream of the crop (mine) or thought force (g. Thomas). I also have a two card and three card selection which I'll do, but the aforementioned routines are the ones I'll do the most...

My handling of Cards Across, where cards mysteriously make themselves appear on the spectator after impossible conditions are met... This is a variation of Paul Harris' "Las Vegas Leaper" and works wonderfully....Plus can be repeated....JPV

Several factores.
I meant there are several factors, not things... I used to have the same problem, where someone would ask fro a trick and I would freeze up. I wasnt sure if it was nerves or just because I knew so many tricks and I couldn't decide... heres my five point system: One, pick my trick/s. I do this at home. I go through all my books, videos, whatever and make a list of all the tricks I like and want to do. Then, I pick five or six that I like, can do in most situations, and have the skill to perform well (I wouldnt do vernons travellers if I just started doing magic for instance... actually, I STILL don't do it...). Second, I pick presentations that I have good hooks, and I know people wont be bored with. The reason for this is if I have a good trick with good patter and I can do it well, then I don't have to worr about people liking it... The hardest part of this is that you'll only learn what patter people really like and fine tune it by performing it. So you'll improve as time goes on. Third, I devide the tricks into three classes: Anytimers, Follow-ups, and extra/oncores. I usually pick quick, visual, and direct peices for the Anytimers. What I mean is that I can do it anytime, as a stand alone, or as a closer. OR, in the middle of a set. When I do a set I uually open with a non-card, so the anytimers are used for the middle or closing peices. Four, Ill often decide AHEAD OF TIME what trick Im going to do if Im asked to do one later. What I mean is that If Im going to a party Ill decide before I walk in to the party which of those lets say 6 tricks Ill do and that way Im not flustered when Im asked to show a trick. Five, I use a skinner idea of grouping tricks together. I know for instance that if I do one trick another comes right to mind. And once I do the second trick, another comes to mind, etc. I also learn, over time, to be more relaxed which means I can choose which trick Ill do depending on the situation. I hope al these help. Good luck ya'll

I'm unclear on starting conditions. Do we have our own loaded deck (a dupe for Here Then There, a stranger for Chicago Opener)? Those are really powerful tricks, but they require things beyond a simple deck of cards. In the case of the former one also needs a pen, which also applies to the Original Poster's Ambitious Card Routine. We're only doing ONE trick? I would never, ever open with an ambitious card. It's (usually) too long and it tips people off to expert controls. Your spectators may think any subsequent pick a card trick is futile if you could just make the selection jump to the top. Also, ACR -- most versions, at least -- is a "watch me" style effect. Maybe this fits into the situation you're describing, which again, I'm unclear on. In the real-world impromptu environments I'm in, it would be a bad move.
As I said in a previous thread, the current in-the-hands version of Triumph I'm playing with is the one I'd use. It works as a stand alone and it works as an opener. For a quicker trick that is similar effect-wise (though not as strong in my opinion), I'd go with Sankey's "Back in Time" (sans the time travel patter that I cannot sell). I'm a big fan of a card changing in someone's hand as an opener; it gets the person emotionally involved. Perhaps you incorporate this revelation early on in your ACR. If the cards are my own, then right at the outset I typically quell lurking suspicions of a "trick deck" by casually handing the cards out to be shuffled as I put the box away, stretch my neck, rub my hands, talk etc (this all-important first impression is not presented as a challenge: "Go ahead and look! You won't find anything. Fool.") For me ACR is strictly encore material (definitely something I try to save up).

I would probably say an ACR. It is impromptu, and very stunning.
