The Absolute BEST One Turtle Ballon was published in the Balloon Book,
"Turtles & Ninjas and More...Oh My!" back in 1990 by Frank Thurston. Clever Guy! =Frank=
The Early Bird may get the Worm, but it's the SECOND Mouse that gets the CHEESE!!!

Inflate about 3 inches of a 260q. Create 5 one inch balls. Twist the 5th ball between the 1st and 2nd. That gives you a head and four feet. Use whatever inflated balloon is left over to form the shell. Pull/wrap the tail between the 3rd and 4th balls to lock the shell in place.
You can snip the excess tail if you're fussy or you can use it to tie the turtle around a wrist. Or just leave it; a 'rare' long tailed turtle. Exact same shape is my lady bug but I use a red balloon. I also add a few touches with a dry erase marker to finish the ladybug off. I've been doing it this way for aeons. If it's in a book I haven't seen it. The version in Mr. Hardy's book is too complicated for me.

Owen,
You use a DRY ERASE marker on balloons? Why not a permanent Sharpie? Steve Thomas |

I saw a balloon twister using one and asked why. This is what he told me:
Dry erase marker ink bonds molecularly with latex; the markings are permanent. As a balloon figure shrinks the dry erase ink won't smudge. A figure tricked up with a Sharpie can smudge as it shinks and the ink becomes more concentrated. It seems counter-intuitive but it works. Any organic chemists on the forum?

Owen,
That's the same way I learned to twist a turtle. I think it's kinda like industry standard. Looks great and works well! |

I use this all the time as described above. You can roll the shell between the feet and use the extra tail to make a bracelet or attach it to something else. I like to make a two balloon flower and attach a ladybug to the petal as described above.
Girls love the lady bug bracelet. Brian |

I saw a video which put a tulip twist on the bubble used for the head. It looks pretty good.

Yeah, but why not use 2 - 260's and a white round and make an oh my gosh look at that turtle, turtle?
By the way the turtle described above is in one if Ralph Dewey's booklets and in red is a cute lady bug bracelet.

Turtle tip, if you fill a balloon 1/2 full and make a 6 bubble turtle like above, then make another behind it and a nother behind it and you get a row of 3 baby turtles/lady bugs. If you make a turtle first then 4 more bodies behind it with no head you get a catipiller.
I love those crazy balloons! http://jewls.balloonhq.com/

Quote: I had my first gig last week where I did some balloon animals and at the very last minute, I decided to include the turtle (Per your directions). It turned out to be the most requested animal that night!
