Question fellow Magis,
I am curious as to what you would recommend as a way to vanish a candle made of paper (designed to look like a real candle)? I bought Rainho's 'Flame of Kandel' and it requires me to vanish a paper candle (which the audience assumes to be real). Currently, I wrap it up in a newspaper, and rip it apart. Just wondering if anyone else some more creative ideas or a way to improve upon this. I LOVE candle magic, but it seems slightly inappropriate to pull out a newspaper in an elegant setting. I've used silks also, but want the effect of it actually disappearing.... Any suggestions? Haas

Could you wrinkle it into a ball if it was made from paper?

Derek,
I could wrinkle the candle into a ball, but then the audience would sort of be tipped to the working of the effect..If they think it's a candle, then see that it's paper..then it doesn't have the effect of it vanishing. Belive it or not, I tried to do the flash paper thing, but I doesn't hold up and have the gloss of the candle. Furthermore, in the effect, there's a small "fake top" which I wouldn't be able to dispose of (it would fall to the floor if I vanished the candle). Believe me, I thought of that. I'm hoping Michael Lair will chime in and help me out! Any other suggestions, please let me know. Haas

Actually, you might be able to crunch it together. I was thinking about this and it might not be a bad idea. I don't know what you use for the top of the candle (I was thinking like maybe a tea candle), you could hold a ribbon in one hand and place the candle on it. Gather up the ribbon in your other hand and lift it up to cover the candle, you can then blow the candle out, come straight down, crush the candle and then shake out the ribbon to show the candle is gone.
BTW, when I say ribbon, I mean like a silk ribbon that is a few inches wide. Derek Merdinyan |

What would you do with the candle when you shake the ribbon to show it empty? It's not like a fantasio candle..it's a 12" long piece of paper and tea candle?. Please explain because this is something that I may consider doing. And yes, its paper rolled around a tea candle.

You can use a hank pull, or if you use a Raven, attach a washer on the bottom of the tea candle, hold the paper candle in your hand, other hand above candle, quickly bring both hands together (crushing candle and allow pull or vanisher to retract the remains. (I've used the hank pull for the vanishing wand (not Fantasio) and it looks like the wand dissolves in your hands. The candle should be no different.

Tony,
Thanks for the help, but the effect is different. The type of candle we're talking about is a long white piece of paper rolled up with a tea light inside (so the audience would think that the rolled piece of paper is a candle. I need to vanish that roll of paper (along with the tea-light). A raven or hank pull would work for a tea candle, correct, but I'm talking about a long white rolled up piece of paper. Any other suggestions? Haas

Hiya, Haas:
This is one of my favourite bits, and I use glossy wrapping paper for the sh***, wrapping it around a PVC pipe core as a form, which is removed when the "candle" is pasted. I usually put a silk inside, thus the candle is "transformed" into a white silk, from which I then produce a Fantasio candle. However, instead of using newsprint, I use tissue paper -- conveniently white to hide the working bits. Tear the paper in the middle, revealing the silk, then crumple the bits of trash in both hands and drop them on the floor (if soft) or on a table or servante. A friend of mine once suggested using a real candle, tipping it (unobserved) into a servante during the wrapping process. I never tried that approach, but believe it would be suitable as well. Like other Magi have suggested, IMO a silk, tissue wrap, or other cover that must naturally be disposed of provides ample cover for ditching any apparatus that is no longer needed. Leland |

When constructing the s**ll, how do you give it a tapered appearance like the fantasio candles have? Please advise.
I also do the tissue paper bit. Looks nice I guess..it's amazing when the candle reappears in the candle holder though...truly awesome effect. I love candle magic, if you have any other ideas, please PM me- I'd be glad to hear them. Thanks Haas

I'm sorry that I did not make myself more clear. The tea candle is at the top of the shell, the bottom of the shell gets put into the hank pull (or placed atop the Raven). The other hand is above the candle. If you bring both hands together, the shell will crush into the hank pull (or on top of the raven, where the magnet will engage the washer on the bottom of tea candle, attaching the entire thing to the magnet). Allow the pull to retract and the entire thing (shell candle and tea candle) vanishes. An alternative solution could be to use the Flip-stick vanish and deposit it into your topit. Tony |

Curiously, noboby's ever noticed the lack of taper -- the finished diameter is really close to that of the Fantasio product, if you use 1/2" PVC pipe as the core. The one time I ever got nailed with a size discrepancy was when a kid in an audience yelled out, "That one's taller than the other one!" Now I match the heights more closely, and believe the lighting of the stub is what "sells" the fake.
Tea Lights are the way to go, although I scavenge them for wicks and wax, creating my own stubs using short pieces of PVC pipe. |

Thank you, Haas, for wanting me to chime in. That was a kind comment. I'm not very familiar with this product, but, if I envision it correctly, here is what I would do: I'd attach a fine wire loop at the base of the candle - attach it to the paper shell. Place your little finger through this loop when you hold the candle. A key ring loop would work fine. Place a piece of doublestick clear tape at the top around the tea light. Get a white 24" silk, and use it as a cover to vanish the candle. When you do, attach one end of the silk to the doublestick clear tape at the top of the candle. Let the bottom edge of the silk rest against the back of your hand holding the candle. The little finger of the same hand is in the loop at the base. When you blow out the candle, let it fall/rotate back toward you on the loop. The bottom edge of the silk will be resting on your hand, and the silk will cover the candle that is now hanging below your hand. You may have to adjust your angles, and use something stronger than doublestick tape to hold the silk at the top, but I think it would work.
Enjoy, Michael Lair |
