Hi all
I got home today to find a message on my answerphone from an agent I have never been used by before. The call was to offer me 3 days work on holiday flights to Lapland. Now, I don't normally do close up magic and these days I turn down most kiddy stuff. But how could I refuse such a fun sounding job ? Hopefully I can carry the jobs off with a combination of balloon modelling, a couple of card tricks and some juggling (juggling in the airline lounge, not on the flights themselves). But a lot of my mix and mingle stuff is out of the window because of the nature of the job. No fire eating, no thumbcuff escapes, no unicycling, no stiltwalking. I feel kinda naked without all that! So I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a few peices of decent family freindly magic. The parents will want some amusment too I am guessing. Not to expensive but the money is ok so it doesn't have to be the cheapest stuff going. They just have to be fairly easy to learn and ok to get on flights with. Many thanks to all Have fun Duncan

Sounds like a great gig! Balloons would be ideal especially christmas models check out Shirley Rays (Balloon Parade) latest book. Then I would consider the classics Sponges,Silks & Rope.Practical Magic have a great routine with a set of christmas silks.Remember you will have very little room to work.

Balloons could be a problem on a plane due to the air pressure. If you blow them up on the ground, then they will expand and possibly pop when in the air. If you blow them up while in the air, they will deflate when you land. I noticed this when I brought along a bag of chips on a plane one time. The bag looked fully inflated like a mylar balloon when we were flying.
I have never tried blowing balloons on an airplane, but just a word of caution.

Brian Flora has a good show with magic and balloons in his outdoor show and everything fits in his pockets. OR you could just do things like
paper tear to mouth coil gypsy floss tt and silk Dlites to thumb tip streamer sponge cube card tricks with children card decks coin flurry to jumbo a puppet rocky or rabbit in the hat why not your thumb cuff escape profess nightmare any type of small pocket magic routines with a pen aka Greg wilson cig routine using crayons jsut think about it and the ideas will start to come.
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

Hi
Thanks guys, given me a few things to think on there. EEEK, no balloons either, I was kinda planning to rely on them. I am pretty good at balloon modelling, having made a fairly decent living as a street modeller for a few years a while back. Now I am really worried.......! I was thinking of: Getting my double lift down so I can expand my limited range of card tricks. Buying a linking ring set. Buying a bitten coin. Buyind a pen through note set. Hopefully this will be enough. The people will be mostly seated on the plane and in the airline lounge, so I should be able to get away with doing the same trick over and again at different seats. They will be strapped in so they can't get up and chase me to see the trick again when I decide to move on Flourish Dude... You asked "why not your thumb cuff escape" Cos the gig is on a plane, the security precations these days won't let me take the cuffs on with me Thanks again Duncan

here are 3 great kids effect that sound perfect for you: Magic Coloring book, 20th century silks, and a stiff rope.
I've used these in EVERY kid's show I've done in the past year and they always kill. EASY to do, would work on a bumpy flight when u have little space and pack fairly light and small. The coloring book and stiff rope reset instantly, and the 20th cent silk isn't hard to reset in a bag or osmething. SThe theatre erupts. The audience is screaming with laughter, but the director is steaming! "You bloody fool!" he cries. "You have ruined me!" The actor is bewildered, "What happened, did I forget my line?" "No!" screams the director. "You forgot the rose!" Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes! ~Spiff |

Hey I just thought if you are going to perform the coloring book then you could use the new mini one. I have just purchased and it is small enough to use in a walk around environmnet. You could keep it in a larger size jacket pocket.

Hi Guys
Just an update. I did my first flights on Sunday and had a great (though VERY tiring time) And balloons are fine on planes. Or at least on the ones I have been on. I was told by the agent that they have put ballon modellers on planes before and there has been no problems so I went ahead with them. I did a bit of an experiment too. I blew a baloon about 1 third up and tied it off at both ends so it was pretty hard, not much give in case of expansion with lowered air pressure, and when the plane reached its cruising height (37,000 feet) I blew another up the same. The first was only very slightly more expanded by this time and the second only very slightly contracted on landing. And none of the ones I made up there exploded. Except for the usual kids sitting on them Just thought this info might be of use to people. Have fun Duncan

Hi,
I suggest you stick with what you know! How on earth can you add new material for holiday season and expect to do a half decent job. If you do not have a repitoire for this type of thing it would be better to refuse it and ask to be considered next year in my opinion. Phillip |
