Canada has a "Walk of Fame" someplace in downtown Toronto that is supposed to be similar to that in Hollywood (stars or plaques in the sidewalk). This morning I received a spam email with a contest (sponsored by Air Canada)taking nominations for star-walk names. The criteria is that the nominee must have been born in Canada or have spent their formative or creative years in Canada, must have had a minimum of 10 years experience in his/her field, and must have had national or international impact on Canada's Heritage (I still can't figure out what Paul Anka's impact on our heritage is!). I looked at the list and did not see Doug's name on the list even though he was a major international star of stage and television in the 70's and 80's. As you may or not know, Doug was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba and died in 2000. I feel he deserves this recognition by his fellow Canadians and that his name has been seriously overlooked. I myself live on the West Coast of Canada (British Columbia)and have never been to Toronto to see the "walk", but I was suprised to see his name missing from the list when he was a lot better known than many of those people already inducted. Unfortunately I believe that nominations may only be made by Canadian residents (Canadian Magicians Unite!!), but it wouldn't hurt for our American and European friends to spam the organization with emails asking why Doug isn't there! To see more about "The Walk of Fame", the web page is at http://www.canadaswalkoffame.com I know this may seem a bit trivial to some, but it makes me mad that recognition is not given where it is deserved. Thanks, and I hope all of you Henning fans out there can help!

There's been an active attempt underway for quite a while now to resolve this issue.
You can read all about what's happening with the attempt to get Doug Henning's star on Canada's Walk Of Fame here: http://www.ibmring49.homestead.com/henningwalkoffame.html |

Thanks for that silverking. I haven't talked to Shawn Farquhar for a long time and wasn't aware of his push to get Doug on the walk. Oh well, it doesn't hurt to keep the subject fresh in everyone's mind! It appears that I was wrong and anyone from anywhere in the world can send in a nomination, ...... so lets get to work!

It sure would help if all the Café users were to send in a nomination. Shawn has worked hard on this, and any help you could offer would be great.
Ivan Reitman has a star on the walk....and what was the first great success he had in this business you ask....well, he produced The Magic Show on Broadway starring Doug Henning! I find it a bit disturbing that, speaking subjectively here, the two most important magicians of the modern era, Doug Henning and Dai Vernon are both Canadians, and that Canada hasn't done squat to recognize either of them. |

I've added a link on http://www.doughenning.com to Shawn Farquhar's page. If you think it would be better to just link right to this page instead let me know...

Hi Greg,
Thanks for adding the link. I personally think that you did right by linking to Shawn's page rather than the walk of fame contest page.In the rules of the contest it says that it is open to only Canadian residents, although nominations will be accepted from anywhere. If you are not from Canada and nominate through the contest page (which will also expire sometime in the near future), they may automatically kick out the nomination because of the breach of rules. By going through Shawn's page it will eliminate the risk of this happening and also give people a better idea of what the whole thing is about. Thanks again for your input! Yes, this has been an on-going challenge. I've just submitted my nomination in hopes that he will get his due recognition.
