Any suggestions for illusions for beginners? My sister and I are trying to build an act catering to children under 10.

Tara:
I would recommend reading the books Seriously Silly(Kaye), and Professional Magic for Children (Ginn). You should also browse thru the Kids section of the Café. Seriously Silly explains what makes things magical and entertaining to children, based upon their age. You do not want to group all children in the the "under 10". Ginn's book is more routine oriented, giving specifics on how he performs for children. Some of his illusions in the book include Duke's Dye-Version, Painting by Magic, Snake Can, Arrow Head, Stock Escape, Boy to Rabbit.. I've started looking into getting some of these tricks - they ain't cheap! Ginn's book was recently reprinted, and he is selling them from his site cheaper than others and after looking at your "count", welcome to the Café. It has been a great place for me to get advice, and ideas. I wish you and your sister well in your plans. John

What about Bill Abbott's stuff? He has a great dvd(s) for children magic.

Andrew Mayne? He has some interesting inexpensive illusions you could put together.

A TT and some type of trick deck from your local magic store should get you on your way!
you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but never all of the people all the time.

Sponge bunnies kills for an under ten crowd.
Levitate a playing card. They'll build a little temple of Legos in your honor. Rope tricks rock too. Most of them have struggled with their shoelaces enough to appreciate knots. And any routine where they get to tie you up will thrill them. 'Course, I'm the same way. Where was I...? Oh yeah... Anything that disappears/reappears is amazing. Note: Conventional wisdom is that anything that disappears HAS to reappear for young kids. This is true, but more importantly, so is the inverse: Anything that spontaneously "appears" has to go away before you finish. In other words, whatever you do, leave their universe the way you found it. Regards, -jjg |

Im sorry I don't know the name of this effect but it it is as follows:
Basically you have a colouring book full of pictures not filled in, then with a magical gesture you open it up again to show the book fully coloured. Very good for children I suppose.Mabe search google for reeappearing colouring book or something like that. Hope that helps a little. Dave.c |

It's called the magic coloring book. Along with this trick I would recommend the vanishing crayons. These tricks go together quite nice.

I like the way you stated, What dissapears must reappear and what apprears must go away. Leaving their universe the way you fouond it. I never really thought about it very much(sad to say). If I made something dissapear I would not reproduce before I left. I would often have small children come up and ask,"where did your scarves go",or "is the bunny gone for good". It has made me think more about my kids show stuff. Thanks again. StevenMT |

I'd love to take credit for the "always make stuff reappear" advice, but it's older than I am.
Conversely, I hadn't heard or read anybody emphasizing the point that, if something appears out of nowhere, the kids want it to go back TO nowhere. It might be different with fuzzy bunnies, though... Regards, -jjg |

Jgravelle,
"In other words, whatever you do, leave their universe the way you found it." This is one of the best magic tips I've gotten. |

I would pick up the book, Complete Course in Magic, by Mark Wilson. It has everything a beginner needs, from close-up all the way up to stage illusions.

I'm just going to repeat what the others have said. Buy a "Magic Coloring Book" - they're not expensive. Get a copy of David Kayes "Seriously Silly". Go to the section on the "Magic Coloring Book", and David explains a complete routine using the coloring book and the audience. The kids will love it! Jim |

Your post was that you and your sister want to do some "illusions" for children. The Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic is a great beginner's book with a section on inexpensive illusions that you and your sister can build and perform.
It's available on Amazon (free shipping on orders over $25) for $12.97 in paperback at http://www.amazon.com/Mark-Wilson-Comple......?ie=UTF8 :magicrabbit: |

The Mark Wilson book is a great idea. I remember making a lot of the illusions in there. I still have the Square Circle I made. It works just as good now as it did then... LOL

Ditto to the Magic Ref (and everyone else)! Mark Wilson's complete course really is full of good "make-it yourself" illusions. That was where I got my first "real" cups and balls routine, as well as what I used to build a "tip over trunk" and "levitation" illusion. Have fun, and remember bigger (illusions)is not necessarily better. My first paid magic shows included cut and restored rope, change bag, stratos-pheres, dove pan (candy production),royal magic card penetration frame,.. and some home made stuff I built. Have fun!

This book is very good, one of the illusions (I think its the mystery mummy) was actually performed on a cruise ship I was on. This big magic show on a ship with 1200 passengers, and the idea comes from a 12.95 book, amazing! |
