Ordinarily I do the miser's dream with a metal can, but I would like to fit my show into an attache case, and the can's too big. A cup would be too small in diameter, and a paper bag wouldn't really work either. So I'm looking for something like the collapsible cups that are used for camping, but in a larger size and particularly a larger mouth opening. That way, I can easily fit the prop into my case, but can quickly open it to full size and have a hard container that will produce a lot of sound when the coins drop. (A collapsible top hat would almost work, but the brim would get in the way.) Has anyone come across such a thing? If not, can you suggest a suitable alternative? Thanks very much.

You might try one of the collapsable cardboard containers that you will come across every now and then> place a china saucer or plate in the bottom to create the ringing sound of the coins being deposited.

As Julie mentioned, John Ramsay used to perform using hat with a plate inside for his miser's dream (see Ramsay Finale) and also used a cane-table base. Talk about an act that packs small.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Right... a collapsible top hat has been used with said plate for the noise. Also, I have used a cocktail shaker, nice size, good sound... you can see a mechanical one at http://www.porperoriginals.com

Paul Fox had a routine using a paper bag that is diabolical.

Thanks for the help, everyone. After mulling this over a doing a lot of experimentation, I've decided what I need: some sort of rigid tube that's about 3" high, with a net bag attached to one end. (Kind of like an old-fashioned change bag without the handle.) The tube would give me a secure place to hold the coins, something I can't get with a paper bag. And the bag would insure that the coins wouldn't make too much noise when they fall (important for my hospital shows), but each coin will be clearly recognized when it falls(including the first one, which would change the shape of the bag). I'm not much of a do it yourself kind of guy, but I think I'm up to making this one. I'll report back if it turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread.

That would make it really difficult to do the move where you "re-get" the produced coins ala Flosso, McBride, etc.
The Paper bag and a COIN WAND would be great.

OH, Hospital shows... why not use some of the "utensils" common to hospital wards? Bed pan?

Jeff,
The "Ring-Necked Bag" solution's not bad, although it's hard to imagine why you'd want a MD recepticle that didn't make noise. In a quiet, close up setting, I'd switch to a champaigne glass or metal goblet. When putting your bag together, you might consider a canvas bag with a "$" stenciled on it. The classic, cartoon "bag of money". These usually had a stiff neck, and you could run the neck material inside the bag.

Thanks, everyone, for the great suggestions.
Curtis, I love the money bag idea. I'm going to experiment with using a paper bag that has a metal, rectangular ring at the top, concealed by folding over the top of the bag. The paper bag would make some noise, and I can replace it after every show or two. Putting a big dollar sign on the bag would make it even better. |
