I have recently subscribed to Magic Magazine and Genii Magazine. I really enjoyed reading all the articles and colums, but then I started to research some others. Some others that I have found are Trapdoor, Channel One, Apocalypse, and Labyrinth. I was wondering if any of these are better than others or if any are out of print. Also my friends have told me about Penumbra, but I couldn't find out any information about it. If you could tell me anything about any of these magazines that would be great. Thanks!

You can get Penumbra from either Hocus Pocus or H&R magic. its pricey at 10 dollars an issue at about 18 pages. the current issue is # 9. it has no advertisement and its filled with just tricks or sleights. I personally like Penumbra.

Is there a way to subscribe to Penumbra?

Make sure you also take a look at Antinomy! It's only 4 issues per year, but like Penumbra, it has no ads and it's chock full of good stuff. You even get a dvd at the end of the year containing all the back issues for that year and some bonus tricks! Definitely worth its asking price.

From what I have seen it looks like they sometimes skip issues. Do you awalys get 6 issues, or do you sometimes get only 5 issuse for your $50?

Magic Seen is a great Magazine which I get everytime it is out, and I think there are 6 issues for that per annum, as they are released every other month. This months feature was Luke Jermay and it was an interesting read. I have all issues to date and they are full of magic and useful magic information

Apocalypse has stopped being issued. There are 20 years worth of monthly issues. Lorayne re-published them in 4 volumes, each volume containing 5 years worth and these are still available from stores and online. This magazine contains a wealth of close effect mostly cards and coins but from some great contributers.

Apocalypse was (is) my all-time favorite. I highly recommend investing in all four bound volumes -- 20 years worth of exceptional magic. Richard's Almanac (also out of print, but available as a bound, collected work) is another good investment (but only after you've made the investment in Apocalypse -- Harry Lorayne is the master). If you are not yet subscribing to Antinomy you are truly missing out on the best current publication. My advice... subscribe now, and purchase all four back issues from the first year. I recently found and began a subscription to Channel One, which I can also recommend. It is also a quarterly and mixes tongue in cheek humor with editorial commentary with clever contributions from well known and lesser known magicians. I enjoyed it enough to buy all available back issues in addition to my subscription. Mind Over Magic is another interesting recommendation. All mentalism with regular contributions from Kenton Knepper, Derek Lee, Peter Marucci and others. I haven't seen Trapdoor or Labyrinth, but I appreciate the tip and will look into those as well.

I completely forgot to mention "Oracle." This is a brand new quarterly dealing mostly with mentalism. Great ideas! They mail a hard copy magazine that contains a password granting access to a considerable amount of additional material on their website. Well worth the price of subscription.
Doriangray... this may be something for you to look into. Check out http://www.oraclemagicmagazine.com/ |

Genii is one of the best magazines I've ever read, in any discipline. Its balance of history, editorial opinion, current items of interest, product reviews, and great tricks contributed by the top names in the business, all presented with sharp writing and stunning visual flair, makes it a top-notch read all the way around.
It doesn't hurt that its publisher/editor (Richard Kaufman) also puts together great books, and offers them at special prices to subscribers from time to time -- right now, for example, "100 by Warlock" is free with a 3-year Genii subscription. I would also keep an eye on M-U-M, available only to members of the S.A.M. If the January 2006 issue is any indication (the first with new editor John Moehring at the helm), it's going to be a valuable contributor to the field. Best, Neil

Correction to the above: "100 By Warlock" is not free with a 3-year subscription -- it's $15 (but will probably retail for $60).

Is the "Crimp" still in print? Do you subscribe to it or do you just order the old issues?
