Absolutely~!
I've asked Eric to send me one of his videos featuring his karate coin routine. It is awesome! Not sure if that is the "full length version", but the flow there is so good that I don't even have time to suspect 2 (or 3 or 4... ha) coins. Karate Coin routine is indeed a cool routine! Packs small but plays big. I love it.
It only takes a minute to learn how it is done, but takes a lifetime to learn how to do it.

You're on the right track, Vic. No one does this effect better than Eric, that I have seen, no one! A large part of it is that the guy is really good, with this and everything he does...he is a real student of the game, quite knowledgeable and does the real work to be as good as he is, inside and out. It looks like real magic in his hands, and that's as good as it gets man.

For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, none will suffice.

The point of the Hugard/Roth Karate Coin is to cause a magical penetration, not to cause a comic alteration of the coin. Not that the comic version isn’t amusing… just that it’s so much less magical than the alternative. |

The Finger Gimlet, in Jean Hugard's COIN MAGIC was Roth's inspiration for the effect that appeared in Kaufman's COINMAGIC.

Bought a drill press for myself for christmas. I think this post may be inspiring me to punch some coins in it. Anyone tried this?

Bs, that's exactly how I made mine. Didn't at the time know exactly where you might buy this sort of karate coin, so I figured that basically a drill press would work and it did. It's probably how it's made anyway. But it certainly works...like magic.

On 2006-01-12 06:10, Jonathan Townsend asked: I dug out my copy of Posin on Conjuring (Busby’s edition, I don’t read French) and compared it with Jean Hugards “A Finger Gimlet” Posin’s method uses a coin with a “plug” and as you attempt to “balance” the coin on the finger of a spectator (not the person from whom the coin is borrowed), it is penetrated by the spectator’s finger, “accidentally”, to comic effect (or so he says). Switches are done as you cross the stage… Hugard’s method is more practical for close up and normal lighting. A shell fits over the gaffed coin. The gaffed coin is held, shell side facing the audience, and the borrowed coin is held in finger-palm in the other hand. The finger pushed the through the hole and causes the shell to flip UP into finger palm, sort of like the flap in a cigarette through quarter. The coin is pulled off the finger and into the shell for the restoration and a false transfer switch is preformed to return the borrowed half dollar. Roth made the thing practical by eliminating the extra bits that could get lost or bent. |

To return to the post, I have had good luck taking coins to a jeweler in the diamond district in nyc...any decent jeweler anywhere can do it . they can drill holes to exact finger size. it is efficient, clean and inexpensive. joey

Dude! Publishing anything about magic is exposure. In the blog listing below you'll find that Royal Road To Card Magic, the book so many cite as the best book for beginners in card magic was published by one of the largest book publishers of the day, and not some small "Hidden" book at all.
http://www.escamoteurettes.com/blog/ Michael Skinner used to love to fool magicians with a card trick and then tell them "It's in Royal Road." a book every card guy is supposed to have studied. Harry Loraynne did card magic for an audience at intermission of a Penn and Teller show where they "exposed" the classic force. Harry used it during the intermission, never missed, and fooled the heck out of people. Good magic fools people even when they know the principles. Bad magic doesn't even when they don't. |

On my recent European tour, I performed a Karate coin effect where the thumb penetrates the coin, which was received very well. Owners of my knockout Coin Magic DVD set can find it in one of the volumes.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

I also would recommend Jean Hugard's Finger Gimlet, popularized by David Roth as the Karate Coin in Expert Coin Magic as described by Richard Kaufman.
