I ordered one of his packages from his website (which would include his two books, his video, and some cloth), well, he got my order mixed up and only sent the cloth. Well, after straightening this up (being very nice all the while) he sent the following:
"NO problem Richard, you are being mailed your order tomorrow morning, I already packed it. It has both of my books autographed to you and the video, and also I threw in Darwin's Inexpensive Illusions. It goes with my books and has 40 great black art things you can do. This is to thank you for your patience, sorry I put the wrong box on your label <g> (strike that, revers it -:) ) I hope you enjoy the black art. Your friend DONDRAKE" Well, I've heard most people in the magic biz are a class act, and this certainly helps prove that fact. |

Don Drake was just retained to work on Jason Alexander's upcoming new show, "In the BLINK OF an EYE". His professionalism, in-depth knowledge of the art and his personality were the main factors in retaining him. He's a sweetheart of a guy and will bend backwards to assist you, even if there's nothing in it for him, only a "thank you."
PS If you could see the large number of orders he's receiving for his BA package, you would understand the mixup.

I wonder if Don Drake ever heard from the guy that got his label placed on your package. Legally, you don't have to return anything sent to you in fault so...who knows.

PaxMentis, would you be willing to tell us more about the upcoming show? I haven't heard anything, but it sounds interesting.
With regards to not legally having to return anything sent to you in fault, is that true? If so, I never knew that. |

Hi Magicsavant,
Would be more than willing to share. However, I think we need more of a bio on you. Can you tell us more about yourself and your interest in large stage effects? Best regards, Bill Thomas

If you're in the US, you might have seen the Consumer Protection Agency ads that started, I believe, in the late 1970s and ran well through the 1990s. (The agency's name has changed: the new site is http://www.consumeraction.gov/ .)
One of their ads mentioned that you don't have to return anything sent to you in error, complete with images of folks receiving goods that were completely inappropriate for them (a cooling fan for an Eskimo living in an igloo, for example). I believe the motivation for the campaign was that unscrupulous businesses ginned up orders, mailed goods to individuals, and demanded payment. |

Bill Thomas-
Who is Jason Alexander, and what is the show that's coming up? Is it TV or stage - and if it's stage, will it be here in Las Vegas or elsewhere? I'm always interested in seeing new work. --Jack http://www.jack-stephens.com |

Jason Alexander...do you remember George Castanza on "Seinfeld"? The short, chubby and loveable awkward friend of Jerry. Jason Alexander also has/had another show recently that's title slips my mind at the moment.
.......This is, of course, assuming I'm thinking of the same Jason Alexander, but I'm pretty sure there isn't another one....... |

If memory served me correctly, Britney Spears was married to a guy named Jason Alexander for about 50 hours, but something tells me it ISN'T that Jason Alexander.

Just finished reading the last few posts and thought I better clear this up as to who Jason Alexander is. He prefers to be known only as "Alexander." I met him a few years ago through another magician and was extremely impressed with him. I felt then as I do now that he has all of the attributes to become a star performer. He's open, honest, and is willing to listen to a good critique of his performance. His personality is like a magnet. People who meet him for the first time, want seconds. He's currently doing what a lot of magicians are doing, putting on a good show with lots of entertainment value. We envisioned him going beyond that. We strongly believed that he was ready to move up. We solicited a group of investors, contacted major players in the industry, received an overwhelming positive response from them and now we're developing his show along with his deep involvement.
Part of our team has researched the new original illusions that we recommended and have been told that they have not been done before. We retained the services of Don Drake, along with Gary Darwin to begin the process of developing the BA that we intended to use. Tony Elwood, President of Indievision has come onboard to develope all of the unique promotional material that will be used for the advertising/publicity campaign. And yes, we intend to advertise heavily. Owen Magic (Alan Zaworski (sic))has scheduled a meeting with us to discuss and develope the publicity stunts that will hopefully attract an audience, two very well-known designers/builders also will be assisting us in developing the show format. They requested that their involvement be kept private until the show is debuted. We have several choreographers in mind, but haven't decided which one to approach. The show will definitely have a theme working throughout the show and the ending is being designed to catch the audience completely offguard. Just when they thought the show was over comes the big bang finale. Currently, we are looking at venues in Laughlin, NV and possibly a few shows in Los Angeles before we actually debut "IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE." We are purposely staying clear of Vegas until a later time. Alexander is currently performing two shows nightly at the Horizon Casino in Tahoe. You all know Tony Clark and he's the producer/brainchild of FUSION which stars Alexander. His contract was renewed four times because of his strong appeal and many offers have come in since it was made public that he will be concluding his shows at the Horizon in February. Alexander will be performing in Vegas at the World Magic Seminar on February 22, after the awards are given out. Anyone interested in seeing an earlier performance which was taped a few years ago can click on http://www.alexandermagic.com THIS IS NOT A PROMO video as some have suggested in the past. Best regards, Bill Thomas PS Thanks Magicsavant for honoring the request for additional info on you. I thought if you lived in the Los Angeles area, I'd invite you over for some indepth disussions on BA.

Just for the record, I'm the guy who got the package. I had ordered 4 yards of material. You are right. Don Drake is a great guy. He wrote right back to me about the mix-up. I have sent back the package to him. I don't care what's legal; in my book, it wouldn't be right to keep it. I wish Don Drake all the best. Black Art is so cool...

Well, Steve, you sir get a standing ovation from me. It's nice to see people doing the right thing all around. In a world of magic polluted with rip-offs and scam artists, it's nice to see that good, honest people exist out there in our field.

It sounds like the Jason Alexander project is going to be great! I live in Las Vegas, so when the show debuts, let me know because I'd love to get to Laughlin to see it.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it on Feb 22 to the magic convention to see his performance there. I will be away from home on tour for a few months and won't return until June. Any reason in particular why you're avoiding Las Vegas? Las Vegas needs more good magic shows. We have a couple here that, quite frankly, just shouldn't be here, yet they are, and they are in major venues and get major advertising. Some of the best magic shows that play Vegas receive some of the smallest amount of attention - such as the "World's Greatest Magic Show," which is probably the best in town (when Copperfield isn't here at the MGM, that is). Anyways, I'm off on a tangent there. Do share though, I'm curious as to your reasons for avoiding Las Vegas at this time. --Jack |

I Think its because Vegas is a place where magic is over saturated. They want to dominate the market where the show is in a different city. Many others are doing this as well. And its a fantastic idea.

I would agree with that!

Hi Jack,
We wanted to test the waters with the new material that's being developed before we shoot for the big time. We're also considering the larger financial investment needed to go to Vegas and when you're working with other peoples money, yo need to be very careful in your decision making. The time factor is another consideration. Alexander's contract will expire in February and finding an available venue in Vegas could take a long time, especially the right kind of venue that will meet Alexander's technical requirements. I've listed you on our guest list to receive a comp when the show opens. Thanks for your interest Jack. Best regards, Bill Thomas

While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I must disagree with some of the posts above. My experience with Don Drake is very different than those above.
He lectured for my IBM group a few years ago. He was VERY rude to everyone. When people asked questions, he would get annoyed and say, "Well, if you were paying attention, I wouldn't have to explain everything twice." (And just for the record, most of the questions were legit and were not covered earlier like he suggested.) While many of the above posts concern his mail order business (which I admit I have never dealt with) I have found Don Drake to be quite the opposite of a "gentleman." I sincerely hope that I just caught him on an "off" night and that he really is as nice of a person as everyone above says David

Well, I hope so too David. I must admit that I have never met Don Drake. I have only dealt with him through his mail order business. I have coversed with him many times pertaining to items I ordered. He has always been nice and most helpful to me. He has offered tips and answered every question I put before him in a timely manner.
