From all that has been said it sounds as though it might be worthwhile to examine the videotape of John Hamman from the Stevens company. Can those who have seen the video comment on it (beyond the fact that it makes him appear to be a very nice man)?
Many thanks for all of your views. Mustard. |

I should note that John Hamman has given us a couple of very useful sleights (or subtleties) which include the Gemini Count, the Hamman Count and the Flushtration Count. Many great effects have been created based on these sleights (ie - Jumping Gemini).

Mustard,
If you have not already seen the Stevens Video you HAVE to take a look. Also check out the Encore Collection in the same series: it contains 5 other Hamman tricks (The Invisible Card !!!). It's a great learning tape: all explanations are very clear and it's really fun to see all those 'fishy count procedures' (someone else in this thread was talking about this) in action: they look wonderful! Only con: audience participation isn't that great... Most of the people are looking from a distance (only 2 people seated at the table). Maybe the setting of the Don Alan tape or the Restaurant magic tape would have been superior, since many of the Hamman tricks depend on the relation between performer and public. Greetings, Femur

I bought the book last year, and after spending some time learning Brother John's double lift, it has become my favorite method. Like Dr Daley's Strike Double lift, it requires no get-ready. I added Twins to my repertoire, and it never fails to entertain with wonder and delight. I look forward to revisiting the book and learning some of your favorites which were mentioned in this thread as well, but if all I got from this book was Twins, the Pinochole Trick, and the DL, it was well worth it. As an aside, it was interesting watching Brother John perform at a convention on a video released last year by Mystic Craig. He performs the first routine beautifully, and after Melbourne Christopher lavishes him with praise, Brother John gets flustered, and repeatedly tells of his nervousness throughout the rest of the set. Somehow, this was reassuring to me. I often get filled with nervous energy after a great response in a close up setting. From the platform or stage, I never get that. (the nervousness, that is)How about you? Anyways....This book is a gem.

On the nervousness: I ALWAYS get nervous the first 3-4 minutes I perform. After that, all things usually fall into place.

The Secrets of Brother John Hamman is my number one favourite macic book with cards. I can't praise it too highly. Richard Kaufman has done an excellent work with the book.
"Final Aces" is a stunner, "The Twins" is great to perform for an audience that is not particularly interested in card magic because the patter story is awesome, and "Watch Me Like Hawk" is amazing. I am really sad for you guys who waited to long to buy it. If you ever get the chance to swap, buy, or borrow it, don't hesitate. And now that Houdini Magic has released The Lost Works Of Bro. John Hamman on 6 (!) DVDs, and also sells the gimmicked cards necessary for many of the tricks included in the book (and the DVDs), you can perform almost everything Brother John Hamman created.

As A Card worker I find Bro. John Hamman’s work to be outstanding. It may be true his personally was different, but the effects he developed can be modified to fit your style if you give it some thought. I have added many of his tricks to my routine, and yes they do require practice, but I did not start in magic to do self-working tricks that can be preformed by anyone. I also like to stay away from Gaffs for the same reason.
I perform a modified version of the twins, and have not only enjoyed my audiences stunned expressions as cards change before their eyes, but also have had spectators jump out of their chair when I finish with only one card on the table (A-La Bill Malone). I did not have the fortune of meeting Bro John to judge his personality, but his work has allowed me to add several unique effects to my collection. I cannot see how any serious card preformer would not benefit from reviewing his work. |

The video tapes which Richard Kaufman shot as "notes" for writing the book are now available from Houdini Magic. They are rough, not meant for public consumption and lit by table lamps with the shades tilted to offer more light. All the material (and more) that is in the book is on them. You get to see Bro. John perform, or perhaps demonstrate is a better word, the material.
What you learn is that Bro. John was "guilt-free" when performing... and this is an amazing thing to accomplish. It allows you to perform miracles. You also see him do some very difficult work (breakless two card turnovers, double deals) with no visible effort. I have to disagree with the idea that all the material is usable. There's a fair amount that's just too long or complex to be useable for anyone who isn't dying to watch a card trick. That being said, I consider these videos, and the material they contain, to be one of my best investments. Bro. John is a legend and when his stuff is good it's without equal. Even when it's less than excellent it's often inspirational. Seeing him, even in this rough form is a real treat. |

I prefered the small booklet written by LePaul "Card Magic of Bro. John Hamman". I'm not a big coffee drinker so I tend to be put off by the coffee table style books .
That's not to say that I didn't like the Secrets book, but what would you prefer? A small booklet where each effect has been carefully chosen for it's commercial appeal and elegance? Or a massive tome where the only selection process involved is that of "we need a shedload of effects to fill up this book". Euan |

I have to agree with wsduncan, the videos are very interesting and of course as he said not professionally shot. However, the banter going back and forth between him and Richard is fun to listen to and you get more of a relaxed view of his effects as he makes a few errors and requests to stop filming. So as you see it is a very relaxed setting and well worth the $59.95 for 6 DVDs of a legend.
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......
