Oprah-"I feel duped"
Frey-""I thought of myself as tougher than I was and badder than I was," To all of the viewers who called and wrote to her telling her she was wrong to allow Mr. Frey to maintain that his book reflected the "essential truth" of his life even though substantial details were falsified, Ms. Winfrey said, "You are absolutely right." NY Times Article I think these guys have been reading my posts. LOL Vandy

I'll give Oprah props. She was wrong, and she should have done what she's doing now, sooner. But at least she is not stubbornly standing behind Mr Frey any longer. And that is the right thing to do. For his part I hope Mr Frey will come clean with HIMSELF.
I don't wish bad things on the guy. I don't really care for him, but I was actully a bit worried that this episode and the lies that he was bullheadedly continuing to portry as fact would wind up leading him back to the junk. Now we will probably have to hear about his "bravery" in admitting his falsehoods. God I hope we are spared that kind of crap. Vandy The funny thing is Frey duped Oprah, then Oprah stood behind Frey. So bunches of Oprah fans stood behind her and parrotted all this nonsense about "essential truth". Now Oprah turns her back on them and rethinks her position. And they are left looking silly. Hopefully people will think about those things when they get played and then decide to be stubborn about it until the are left looking like hopeless suckers. It's not anyones fault when you get lied to except the liar. Backing up the liar and refusing to examine the facts is not any way of "saving face". There is no face to save, think for yourself and quit rationalizing everything. This is not directed towards Eric. I'm just speaking in generalities. You were right all along Jack. Sermon over.

Every chance I get... One time I powerwalked across the country and back. In two days. With a 500 pound backpack. In the middle of Nevada I was jumped by a gang of Hell's Angels. But I fought them off using only my bare hands and a plastic spork.
Oh wait, none of that ever happened. I'm "aFREYed" I let my imagination run a little bit wild there. :)

At some point in one's recovery from an addition, one loses any interest in telling "war stories".
Those who are truly looking ot overcome an addiction don't need to hear "war stories" either.

Jon, That's exactly I was thinking when I talked about him coming clean with himself. Good point.

Quote: The quote distorts it a little bit. Publishers may have told him that non-fiction outsells fiction (and it does), but they would have done so in order to encourage him to abandon the "novel" and rewrite it as a memoir -- but not a fabricated memoir. No one would have told him -- and no publisher has been accused of telling him -- that he should label his novel as "non-fiction".
Found it - it was in this week's (1/27) The Week magazine (which is excellent, btw (not just this week - all the time)). It cites an article by Adam Kirsch in The New York Sun. A couple sentences from The Week: It was Frey's agent who submitted the book to some publishers as fiction, others as non-fiction. His publisher, Random House, was never aware that the book was being submitted to some places as fiction. They were told it was a memoir and were assured by Frey that the book was completely true. The publisher, and the editor -- Nan Talese -- have taken some heat, but that heat is unfair. The blame lies with the author and his agent. |

He's been dropped by his literary manager. The status of the movie based on the book is in jeopardy. And there really isn't anyone left making the lame excuses anymore. Oprah really flayed him on her show, that was brutal. He's still sticking to his own talking points though. His recent "apology" shows that. This was not a case of embellishment and I think a lot of people that were saying "no big deal" understand that now. I'll bet James Frey understands it.
I don't think he's finished, but he took a hard hit.
