Has anyone seen Nightmare Alley (1947). I would recommend it to mentalists and carnies alike!

Yes, I saw it when it first came out.
I also have a video tape of (most) of it, sent to me by a colleague back East who had some problems taping and/or copying it for me. Have you read the William Linsday Gresham book on which the movie is (imperfectly) based? Dynamite! |

For those interested, Gresham's Nightmare Alley has been reprinted in the anthology entitled Crime Novels : American Noir of the 1930s and 40s. edited by Horace McCoy and published by the Library of America.
I'm only about half way through the copy from the local library, but I can imagine that turning it into a film in the 1940s would have required quite a bit of bowdlerizing. |

Am I awake or what? I knew that but misunderstood it as a NEW book that came out by that novelist that has a similar name.
Thanks!!! Ellen harryandersonfan.com |

No, it's an older book. The late Bruce Elliott reviewed in briefly in the old PHOENIX back when it first came out. And Tyrone Power had to fight tooth & nail with the studio execs to get them to let him do the film because of his squeaky clean "hero" image at the time.
Appropos of nothing, Gresham was married to a woman named Joy, who left him & later married C.S.Lewis, the famous English religious writer. This gives a whole new, subtler meaning to the title of one of Lewis' books, "SURPRISED BY JOY". I think Grsham also wrote a book on carnivals in general, called MONSTER MIDWAY, with a very good chapter on readers entitledThe Romany Trade. |
